Kind of glad Florida is running it back. They get the PED guy and the 37 year old rat on a 6 year deal. They will probably be a threat again next year, but back to back to back is a lot of hockey for their aging core and has to take a toll. I assume this won’t end well. But let em enjoy it while it lasts

Yeah & half their roster will be in the Olympics next year. Tkachuk has played through a broken clavicle two years ago and the torn adductor this year, not exactly being careful about long term health. Bob and Marchand are my age. Blackhawks fans have seen this movie. It’s great but the end is coming.

and then they give Ivan Provorov 8.5 annually. JFC

The athletic hates it:

Defenseman Ivan Provorov signs a seven-year deal, worth $8.5 million in average annual value, with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Uhhhhhhhhhh.

Honestly, the contract grade could end there; it’s hard to find a more apt feeling than complete and utter confusion. On paper, Provorov’s new contract is one of the most baffling contracts in recent memory and it feels almost impossible to spin this in any positive light. For almost any team this would be a back-breaking deal that would be difficult to make up for with other savvy bets. This is an immediate albatross that Provorov will have an extremely difficult time living up to.

Yep, and they’re already saddled with Severson’s similar deal.

From their recent “worst value contract” article. For reference, most teams have 2-4 names on their list. Chicago and Detroit have 7. Florida and Winnipeg had none.

Montreal had 9

Damon Severson: The Blue Jackets’ cap sheet is pretty clean compared to most teams that miss the playoffs. Damon Severson’s deal (six years remaining at a $6.25 million AAV) is the exception — he’s been deeply inconsistent and mistake-prone — and you’d toss Elvis Merzlikins (two years left at a $5.4 million cap hit) in as well if you included goaltenders. Other than that, Columbus has done well not to saddle itself with overpaid veterans.

Kurashev signs with San Jose

Several former Hawks on the move today. Blackwell to the Stars, Gaudette also to the Sharks, and Katchouk to the Lightning.

Not just the NHL, the NBA has been pretty boring too.

Next year’s FA class has some big names but with the cap increasing again I’m sure several of them will be signed to extensions before they hit the open market.

I'm fascinated by Penn State's ability to recruit some of the elite young talent. Their ice hockey was a club sport for decades, so has a far shorter history as a viable varsity team. What's their selling point? "We don't care how long you stay, just show up for a year or two before going to the NHL"? There's some secret sauce happening here.

$750k in NIL helps.

I think the easy answer is there are not many D1 brand name schools with a varsity team. And now that CHL players are eligible for college hockey there’s a big influx of talent and not many places to go.

PSU is one of what, six big ten teams, and only about 60 total D1 teams. It shouldn’t be that hard for them to recruit against Maine, New Hampshire or North Dakota.

Don't forget the NCAA Champion Western Michigan University Broncos!!!!!!!!!

Their hockey facilities at PSU are incredible. Elite. They have a mega donor who decided he wanted them to be an elite D1 program about 10 years ago and now they are.

Also, NIL is more lucrative than Canadian juniors for the top guys, so college hockey is going to get a lot more one and done Canadian products now. Big 10 TV deal helps too.

Yegor Chinakhov has requested a trade out of Columbus. What is your opinion on him, Derwood?

He's good when he's healthy. Didn't look right when he came back from IL and was pretty ineffective.
