It was pretty obvious he would.

I really don't have a problem with it. These new kick off rules seem to give pretty good field position and a very speedy runner like Velus could break open a lot of runs. Not sure if they use him there, but I wouldn't have a problem with it. Yes, he's fumbled a lot in that role, but I think you can forgive suckage in a season where nearly everyone sucked. Clean slate. He was a Poles draftee, and Poles is sticking with him, so try to use his speed in whatever ways he might be able to improve field position. If he screws up, next man up.

Has anyone researched how different the field position is with this new kick off rule? I feel like it's going to lead to more points scored.

also, wth is Raw? I havent seen him post about the Bears in awhile

I reached out to him in May via DM. He responded that he would likely be back, but just wasn't much going on. Told him I missed his comments about the draft and such. I certainly hope he will be back soon. He brought a lot of quality stuff to the Bears threads.

Average starting field position is the 29 yard line with the new rules (per Hoge & Jahns pod)

Hoge wondered if teams would consider just booting it through the end zone and letting teams start on the 35 versus the downside risk of a big return. Just a theory he was floating as a ST guy...

Don't they start at the 30 now if you boot it out of the end zone?

Possibly. Seems like they were purposely practicing the kickoffs with returns, probably to get ST adjusted to it.

Yeah I'm actually pretty nervous about how things are gonna go with the new kick off rules. Giving teams an additional 5-10 yards per drive will increase scoring dramatically. Expect a lot of weirdness in returns, a lot more variance.

And that will honestly make the value of a very good punter all the less important.

I know I'm just out of step with how fans enjoy sports, but the annual "people fall in love with preseason heroes" schtick has been amped up 1000% due to hard knocks and I'm glad we won't be on it again anytime soon.

Ian Wheeler was a 7th string rb who wasn't even going to make the practice squad, and his acl tear perversely lets him spend a year on an nfl team's payroll that he wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

Tyson Bagent was terrible last season. We saw a handful of good throws this preseason that make me optimistic he might have improved enough to be an adequate backup, but he's nowhere near being on any teams' radar as a potential starter.

Austin reed is a completely standard 4th string qb that every team keeps around for a year or two then cuts for a younger version.

Bears reddit was circlejerking about how you can tell our wr depth is better because "Collin johnson would have been our wr4 last year.". (We had Johnson most of last year on our practice squad.)

How could you possibly think that was real?

And not only is it a parody account, it's a parody account of an account that is a joke to begin with.

I don't care what Kyle says, the Ian Wheeler storyline was heartbreaking. Yes, Hard Knocks probably pumped him up and he was never making the team, but you don't like to see anyone's season end that way

Now, I fully expect Reed to be out of the league in two years, but I do like our apparent plan of bringing in random young QBs every year and letting them hang around on the slim chance that they turn into something.

Blasingame is already back on the roster. You never know which cuts they mean and which ones are procedural at this time of year.

Everyone knew that one was procedural

Agreed, throw a late round/UDFA every year on one to two QBs and see if there's something there. Doesn't hurt. Too much variance between skill sets as well as pre-snap/reading the field not to take chances every draft.

I'm pretty sure Hoge said 35, but I could be wrong. The whole point of his comment was "what's 5 yards to avoid a returnTD?"

The Bears signed former GB WR Samori Toure to the practice squad.

This is a good pick up for the Bears.  Toure has shown some flashes in limited playing time.  He and Grant DuBose (signed by Miami) were squeezed out from the Packers' WR room because they have a lot of depth (though inexperience).

If you kick it into the end zone and it is downed or out of the end zone, the ball is brought to the 30.  I think I remember what you are referring to with Hoge, though.  I believe he was wondering if it would be good to switch that to the 35.  I think his thought was that if the average position after a return is the 29, then teams may just eventually kick it out of the end zone and give up the 1 extra yard in order to save the chance at a big return.  However, if it is the 35, maybe they would hesitate to do that.

Was just browsing the early power rankings and it's very nice to see Carolina sitting at #32. Having the first pick in the 2nd round would be wonderful. The gift that keeps on giving.

I shoulda tossed a few bucks at the Bears winning it all. I'm not anticipating it, but I was in Las Vegas for 2 damn weeks. I blame not doing it on getting Covid the moment I got there. Kinda ruined the whole trip.
