Additionally, the Cubs' prospect list gets really murky after around 10 or so.  It's not a bad thing, but the farm consists of a lot of lottery tickets, injury guys going through rehab, bad luck types who are bounceback candidates, and low ceiling/high floor types.  It really comes down to what your preferences are.

The more I think about this trade the more I don’t like it. Ok this guy is old but there are team control years and his stuff is not 98 mph, he is just a good pitcher and we have little to none of that in our bullpen.

Jack Neely

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 70 | Control: 50 | Overall: 40

Can someone explain how Neely has a +FB, a ++Slider, average to above average Control BUT is only rated as an overall prospect of 40????

My guess would be since he's strictly a reliever his upside is limited.

Pretty much this. I can't recall a single time I've ever seen a guy who was strictly  a reliever, get a 50 grade. A 50 is basically top 100.

Very true. But as a reliever it appears he has a couple of + pitches with good control. That can be a very good pen arm. Maybe not closer, but maybe a high leverage 7th or 8th inning guy. (Kind of like Lieter has been) And he is much younger with much more team control.

Don't get too caught up in the grades.

Very much this. He's probably not a closer, but he stands a very real chance of being a strong set up man.

I expected Cowles rather than Neely to be the one who got a major bump after seeing updated scouting reports, but hey as long as someone did

I think it's the standard "low ceiling, high floor" situation. He probably debuts next season and gives us quality innings and there's value there but a non-closer reliever can only get you so far. I still think it's a quality pick up.
