40-man? How about someone like Van Buren? There are already 6 guys in the pen (Bartosh, Hawkins, Leicester, Remlinger, Rusch, Wuertz), so I don't know if they necessarily need to add another pitcher to the 25-man.

Hopefully Borowski is back soon.

Somehow...this figures.

So, who gets his spot on the 40 man and who gets called up?

Wellemeyer? :(

Welly is already on the 40-man, though he is a good bet to take Fox's 25-man spot.

I meant he will probably get the call up to replace Fox. Time for Hendry to go get Dotel from the A's. The A's are terrible and going no where this year.

Two games below .500 20 games into the season isn't terrible. Given the way Blanton and Harden have pitched and the fact the Angels haven't run away, I don't think they're that bad (yet).

I know you said Wellemeyer, Kelton and Hollandsworth would not be enough to get Dotel but I think it might be. If not, make it a sweeter deal for the A's and go get Octavio.

I'd be willing to part with the minor leaguers I think are needed for the trade, as long as it's not Dope, Harvey, Pie and a few of the pitchers (I'd trade Guzman). I still don't think Dotel is going anywhere till at least June/July.

Is Guzman even alive? He's been MIA since spring training. :wall:

I'd call up Kelton and go with a normal 11-man pitching staff.

Doesn't that run the risk of him having to clear waivers if/when we send him down again, or does that only occur once a year?

I'm not 100% on the rules, but at least in regards to the 40 man, if when Kelton gets sent down he's removed from the 40 man again, he's pretty much a FA, and can sign anywhere without the obligation to be added to the 40 man roster. As far as being kept on the 40 man but off the 25, I haven't a clue.

Bruce Miles writes that Wood is feeling better, but the indications of the problem being in the "posterior rotator cuff" sounds worrisome to me. :? I don't like hearing about rotator cuffs in connections with pitchers.

Wood better: The Cubs said pitcher Kerry Wood reported to the ballpark feeling better than he did Sunday, when he came out of his start after 5 innings with a sore right shoulder.

Dusty Baker wouldn’t guarantee Wood will start Saturday at Houston but said things were looking up.

Trainer Mark O’Neal said the problem is in the posterior rotator cuff. During spring training, Wood suffered from bursitis in the shoulder.

“We just wanted to curtail the amount of trauma his posterior shoulder took yesterday going into his next start,” O’Neal said. “If the (cold) weather wasn’t what it was and he wasn’t complaining about it being cranky prior to the game, we probably wouldn’t have done anything.”

I didn't see anything about this on the board but according to Rotoworld:

Cubs manager Dusty Baker said the blister on Carlos Zambrano's index finger has healed and he doesn't expect any problems tomorrow.

Zambrano will start Tuesday against the Reds. Apr. 25 - 11:46 pm et

Borowski:

Cubs.com[/url]"]CHICAGO -- Joe Borowski threw 35 pitches in a simulated game on Wednesday and the Chicago Cubs will meet to decide the next phase of the reliever's rehab.

..............

"I'm very happy with everything," Borowski said. "Everything felt good coming out. I didn't have to hold back on anything at all. Everything passed the test."

"For the first time out, he looked pretty good," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "It's been a long time since he's been on the mound against a hitter. His slider looked good. His fastball and location was fair, unless he tried to do too much and then he opened up sometimes.

"The main thing was that he felt good physically and didn't feel anything where the fracture was," Baker said. "That's a very positive sign. He has a way to go. He's starting all over almost from Spring Training."

Borowski admitted his control wasn't what he'd like.

"It's not as good as it could be or as it will be," he said, "but for the first time facing hitters in such a long time, it's definitely something you can build on."

Garciaparra:

CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs shortstop Nomar Garciaparra underwent successful surgery Wednesday at Hahnemann Hospital at Drexel University School of Medicine, the team announced.

Garciaparra was injured in the third inning April 20 in St. Louis as he ran out of the batter's box. He suffered a left groin avulsion of the adductor longus muscle, which, in layman's terms, is a ruptured tendon.

He did not have surgery to reattach the tendon, but instead underwent a procedure which involved the reinforcement of the abdominal and groin musculature. The surgery lasted approximately 30 minutes.

Dr. William Meyers, a former team physician for the Boston Red Sox, performed the operation in Philadelphia.

................

There is no timetable for Garciaparra's return. It will be at least two weeks before he can begin any rehab.

According to Dusty, Borowski will throw another simulated game tomorrow at 2:30 and then reevaluate him. Hopefully it won't be too much longer until he makes the trip to Iowa.

As for Fox, he still hasn't made a decision and is waiting to hear back about what exactly is wrong. He'll make the trip to see the doc on Wednesday. If it's "rehab-able," he won't hesitate to go after it 100%. If it requires surgery, he still doesn't know what he'll do.

As a personal note, I've been pretty impressed listening to Fox talk. It sounds like his team loves him and hopefully he'll be able to pitch again.

Borowski's simulated game went well today. He'll go to Iowa on Monday and pitch Tuesday. They want to get back-to-back outings in over there and at least one two-inning stint. He'll likely throw four or five times with the I-Cubs before he rejoins the team.

Kerry will have an MRI on Monday to figure out what's going on:

Cubs.com[/url]"]"It's the same thing we've been trying to battle through," Wood said. "I thought I was close to turning the corner. I felt great warming up, felt great the first two innings. In the third inning, it just kind of crept back up, and we haven't gotten rid of what's going on in there. It was a little more cranky today than it has been."

..........

"The slider and everything, that's the way I pitch," he said of the second inning. "It seems like when I [felt] good and [kicked] it into that next gear, the next inning I came back and just didn't feel good."

"It's not getting any worse, and it's not getting any better," Cubs athletic trainer Mark O'Neal said. "It's continued longer than we'd like."

..........

"Most of the time it's been after the pitch or between innings," Wood said. "It was uncomfortable, no question."

"Everything before has been he feels the irritation in the back of his shoulder after he releases the ball," O'Neal said. "Tonight, when he said he was feeling it when he was throwing, that's why we got him out of there."

...........

"Right now, in my mind, it's tendinitis from the way it's acting," Wood said. "You can get it loose, and every time you take a break, it seems to tighten up.

"We'll see what the [team doctor] thinks [on Monday] and obviously how I feel," he said. "[On Sunday] I could come in and feel all right. It feels good when I'm not throwing and doesn't feel good when I'm throwing."

............

"We tried to treat it as best we could," Wood said. "It was almost like I never really completely got rid of it. I never really turned that corner. I thought I was close a few times. Tonight, I took a step back."
