Taillon might actually get a pretty decent haul if the Cubs decide they want to open up some budget for 2025.

I think him and Baltimore could be a good fit. Don't think the Orioles will have to pay a lot compared to another team grabbing Crochet, but think he can do a good enough job to help the Orioles.

Opens up money next year and gets them under the luxury tax this year. Think it would be the ideal move for them if they cant deal Happ or Bellinger

When was the last time they hit double figures?

Believe it was the first week of the season

edit:

April 16, a game we lost 12-11 against the Diamondbacks after Alzolay blew it with 2 outs in the 9th.

the only other time they scored double digits was a 12-2 win over Colorado in their 2nd home game of the season

What’s the plan to replace the guy with a 2.99 ERA in 80 innings that we control for the next two years? I’m fine with trades, but don’t think anyone wants a full scale rebuild so making sure we still have a rotation next year that is playoff worthy.

It's selling high. His peripherals, while still solid, are screaming regression. After today's start he's still at a 3.79 FIP, 4.21 xFIP, and had an xERA before today of 3.63. Like I said, that's still a nice pitcher to have, but if you can get a premium piece for the future and open up salary for 2025, I'm game.

Unless they're getting a ready bat or minor league SP that can begin the season with them next year, you kinda gotta hold onto one of your better starter that under a reasonable contract for 2 more years.

Basically what Tryptamine said about him beating his periphs right now. Think it would be great to sell high on him now and achieve 2 things the FO is going to use an excuse not to spend next year.
Replacement wise nothing but unknowns internally but could get an extended look at Brown and Wicks when they are healthy.

Do you guys imagine the rest of the league is missing out on Taillon’s periphs? Who is buying high on a 92 RH in his mid-30s with 2 TJs and non super mega ultra duper periphs? They’re not getting Premium Piece or An Asset or any of these super specific real people you’ve heard of back

The return might not be great but im sure some team would take him with pitcher injuries decimating most of the league. Also some team might think they can get more out of him with a mechanical change. Kind of how like the Cubs did when they messed him up last season

So call it a salary dump and don’t lie to everyone about top talent like Premium Asset or Future Piece being on the table

I never said anything like that Tom!!!!!

We have a 1000+ innings on Jamo, we know what he is at this point. He wasn't as bad as he was last year and he isn't as good as he's been so far this year. I'm very much on the move Belli & Taillon train for financial freedom and build around the rest of the team.

As to your question, there's two avenues. Which avenue is best is dependent on what they do at hitter.

1. If they spend big on a bat(s), go the cost controlled SP trade route. It's time to spend prospect capital.

2. If they miss on Soto for example and go the route of trading for a bat or spending less on a bat in FA, swim in the waters of the high end SP FA market - Burnes/Flaherty/etc.

As much as I appreciate how solid Jamo has been this year, I don't believe his performance will be repeatable next year. I fully expect the MLB to make changes to the ball again in favor of offense after this disaster of a season league wide and I expect that to pile on to Jamo's looming regression next season. It's not the end of the world if we keep Jamo, but we're more than likely paying $17m aav for a low 4 ERA the next two seasons.

Next season is fixable, but it's going to take Jed moving some chess pieces around and getting aggressive this offseason in FA and with moving prospect capital.

I was thinking more Tryptamine’s tease. Could you imagine if Jed horsefeathers Hoyer pulled off landing Premium Piece? The entire landscape of MLB would shift!

Hyperbole isn't a strong selling point.

Hopefully this is the game that turns it all around.

It probably isn’t gonna happen, but horsefeathers, I want some optimism!

I think the hole is too deep, but the schedule is really light from here.  Your mileage may vary on the quality of the top teams in the AL Central, but the only good teams the Cubs face the next two months are arguably them and then the Orioles and the Brewers.

I’m all for clearing some salary for next year. However if all they get is a fringe prospect for Taillon I don’t see the point of trading him. You mention shopping in high end starting pitching and mention Flahery as one of your options. He is much closer to Taillon than he is Burnes(the other guy you mentioned). If they deal Taillon for a fringe prospect and then pay Flaherty something like $80m/4 years they are actually spending more yearly and longer in a similar pitcher. Not really solving the problem of payroll next year and not really getting a solid prospect for their troubles.

They’re not though. Flaherty is going into his age 29 season, Taillon age 33 season. Flaherty has a 33% K% this season vs Taillon’s 18.5%. If you want to hold Flaherty’s injury ridden seasons against him, that’s fine I won’t argue against that. But a healthy Flaherty is in a completely different tier than Taillon plus being 4 years younger. Flaherty just misses more bats, which I think will be extremely valuable next season.

If they trade Jamo they’re going to have to eat some of his salary to get anything of value. So it’s not going to save that much.

Happ has a NTC. We are looking at Bellinger, Wisdom, Bote, and bullpen flotsam and jetsam. Maybe Nico.

They are the worst put together $220M team money can buy.

I don't get everyone talking about moving nico?

Young, homegrown and cheap.

Nico and Happ need to stay. It would just add additional holes and we aren’t going to upgrade over them.
