I don't think its a stretch to say that Neris is actually pitching worse as closer than Adbert did before getting demoted.  But obviously he's only allowed 1 HR and most importantly he's 5 for 5 in save attempts.  Baseball is a weird sport lol

Yeah you can give up first base a lot more times without getting burned.  Weird as it is to say, Adbert has been very normal aside from the HR.  Normally whatever root cause leading to the HR would have him giving up a bunch of other lasers all over the field, but so far nope, 5 HR, 7 1B, no 2B/3B

I don't get as worked up about the pen as most.  Especially when before the past ~week they were forced to throw essentially 50% of the team's innings.

That said things are clearly in flux at the top, so I'd like to see Craig start pushing the guys who are actually performing up the depth chart quickly.  Ride the hot hand essentially.  Like I would have given Keegan Thompson the save opportunity tonight.  Daniel Palencia looked incredible on Sunday, I'd give him a healthy bump in leverage his next outing.

And of course when the rotation gets back closer to full strength Ben Brown needs a real look as a late inning option.

Bullpen metrics leading into today:

  • WAR: Cubs rank 26th
  • ERA: 22nd
  • FIP: 24th
  • WPA: 14th

For bullpens, WPA (win probability added) may be the best measure of how the bullpen has actually impacted games to date (though not the best predictor of future success). Overall, the bullpen has been bad at preventing runs. But it has had a small net positive impact on actual game results.

Take from that what you will.

Also, for those wanting to trade the entire farm for Mason Milller...the Cubs only have two more blown saves than Oakland so far this year (6 to 4).

is that good?

I really wasn't expecting Shota to be better than prime Arreita, yet here we are.

Mason Miller is incredible, but what would a realistic asking price even be?  Horton + additional prospects?  No thanks!

Brown/Triantos?

Funny that the ump probably got the call correct (and the call probably only stood because of his initial call), when he actually made a terrible call in the first place.  Like, Alonso's hand got to the plate so much earlier than the tag.  There is no way the ump could have seen that his had bounced up in the air over the plate the entire time before he was tagged.  I know in real time, everything happened so quick and it is hard to be an ump, but thanks for blowing (but actually not) the initial call.

Thank god Imanaga is pitching like prime era Pedro Martinez during this stretch when every other player is on the IL.

The fact they're still winning games while they're so decimated kinda makes me feel like there's good karma going around on this team

Part of me agrees with you, the other part of me thinks that Alonso beat the throw by so much that the ump had to have somehow seen something that made him ignore how much later the ball got there.

Agreed, several of the Cubs recent wins since the injuries have felt at least somewhat lucky to have won.  Tonight scoring 1 run and getting that play at the plate, Monday getting no hit for 7+ innings and Morel taking a break from his massive slump to homer, the PCA HR game against Houston, the Cubs getting out of several jams in the 2nd game against Houston.  Of course you could argue luck is largely the Cubs pitching much better allowing them to withstand a pretty massive team wide hitting slump, and that's part of it.  Either way, I feel very fortunate that we've been able to bank these wins during this period.  Win tomorrow and its a winning road trip against 2 pretty good teams without several of our best players.

Kind of Rod Beck-ish

would be nice if Neris could catch a wave half as high as Rod did.

“Blocking is confirmed…there is no blocking.”

First: LOL at the ump making that statement.

I missed the game because I was sleeping but was the ending of the game as confusing as the above quote makes it out to be?

That line was confusing, and hilarious because the crowd started erupting in cheers when he said confirmed.  But it was very quickly clear as he finished the announcement he was calling him out and every Mets player and fan did one of these

The umpire didn't say it like that is written.

He started by addressing the review of 2 calls on the field. Then he said "Blocking" followed by a brief pause and said "is confirmed. There is no blocking." The call on the field was that the catcher didn't block the plate, so that call was confirmed. Then he addressed the 2nd part of the challenge.

I didn't really find it confusing. Maybe he could have inserted a couple more words to make it less "confusing" but he pretty clearly broke down what the review determined.

Like I said, I've only read the end of the game. So thank you, on the added context.

The anger over Ian Happ batting 3rd is like the weirdest thing from this fanbase over the last 15 months and considering the competition that is saying something

Yeah it is possibly nitpicking considering the fact he should start to get better pitches to look at once Seiya & Belli return.

To be fair, quite the majority of the lineup is hovering near the Mendoza line the last 7 days. Great game by Imanaga though.

The fact that the offense is being carried by the 4th outfielder and a AAA CF nincompoop is disturbing. I mean if it was the AAA corner outfield nincompoop it might make sense, but even he isn't hitting. Can't go on much longer.
