Another reason to believe its a hairline fracture which would heal faster.

Reading online it would take 6-8 weeks for a hairline fracture to heal, so maybe we'd have everyone except Merryweather back by late June?  Of course it may take some time to get right again after being out so long so maybe we start rolling by mid-July?

Funny because the 2023 Cubs were 14-10 through their first 24 (2024 Cubs are 14-9 through first 23) then played an absolutely abysmal May after Bellinger got hurt for a month to spiral down the standings, only to recover by late June and start to roll in July.  Unfortunately the May swoon put us on a path where we missed the playoffs by 1 game.

This is why we got Counsel, so that we just inexplicably win regardless of what should happen.

  • Happ
  • Hoerner
  • Busch
  • Swanson
  • Morel
  • Tauchman
  • Wisdom/Canario/Mervis - hopefully between the three of these guys you can put together, like, a .773 OPS or so
  • Amaya/Gomes
  • PCA

Not pretty, but not dire.

The way that reads is PCA in every game. You could have a game with Tauchman in CF and Canario or Wisdom in RF. More accurately, 3 of Tauchmam, PCA, Wisdom, Canario, Mervis.

Absolutely confirmation bias on this one but it feels like the Cubs' track record of guys getting injured literally just as they are starting to catch fire at the plate is unmatched.

depth will show for a while. Put PCA at the bottom of the order. Tell him his job is to get on base by an means. Hopefully he listens.

Just tell him to bunt 100% of the time LOL.  Maybe it works 35% of the time.

I'm not counting on much offensively, but there's really not much choice but bring him up.  You could stick Tauchman or Canario in CF but we still need another OF on the bench and we have 40-man issues.  He can contribute defensively and hopefully does better on the bases.  He may always struggle with contact issues, and at times chase issues.  If we can stay at .500 by June i'm ok with that at this point.  This could be a grind until some of these guys come back.

We're lucky to have the depth that we do.  It could be guys like Hosmer and Ortega filling these spots.

Really not a fan of giving canario or wisdom starts over PCA until PCA forces us to bench him. Happ/tauchman/one of those dudes is pretty dire defensively.

Just spitballing here: he has discomfort and comes out of the game. X-rays are negative.  Wakes up pretty sore on Wednesday morning. Cubs project he’s unavailable to bat (and thus play) for at least a few days. So they “find” a hairline fracture and IR him. This allows them to call up a player while Cody is unavailable for this stretch of 16 consecutive games.

iIn the past, how many times have they played a week or so short-handed before putting a player on IR?

So maybe, just maybe, the “hairline” is really tiny. #WishfulThinking

So the argument is they want reinforcements while Bellinger is hurt, so they manufactured the presence of a fracture so they have a more "legitimate" reason to IL him than the actual pain he has?

Just think maybe it saves face a bit for medical staff since they said the X-ray was negative. I’m sure it’s areal fracture and he’s out until August. And it wasn’t really an arguement as much as just a spontaneous thought.

Happ/Tauchman/Canario isn't bad defensively I don't think.  Canario looks awkward making plays sometimes but he seems to read the ball and run well so I don't see him a a liability.  Wisdom on the other hand.......
