Someone is not doing their job well if they're not good soon.

There’s just about zero chance they’ll be good next year. We’ll be lucky if they have a proper 1st line. They might battle for a playoff slot 25/26 season.

They need to find a way to turn cap space into real players, but anecdotally it doesn't seem like there are that many actually good players who hit Free Agency, and most of those guys want to play on teams that are already contenders, not hoping to be contenders. Their best sell right now is that Bedard made Philipp Kurashev look like a decent winger... their next best sell is overpaying people, which is how you end up with bad contracts

They need to trade some of their surplus draft picks for guys.

They can afford to overpay a 3 year contract (welcome back Patrick), but can’t really go big on any term beyond that.

demidov is a good consolation prize

I can't decide whether I want them to prioritize getting another scorer or if I want to lock down a #1 defenseman.

The biggest complaint I've heard about Demidov is his skating, which may not fit the style the Hawks are trying to build.

Disconnected thoughts there, but I'm going to be thrilled with whomever they take at #2.

I wouldnt be unhappy with a #1 D; the Hawks needs are everywhwere it seems.

Is it a good idea to take to draft a goalie nearly draft?  I know they drafted one last year, was thinking it's not a bad idea to spend at one pick on another goalie.

No, very poorly written nevertheless, point is the Blackhawks should take a goalie in every draft.

One every year seems like too many. There’s just not enough room for that many goalies.

Probably not a bad idea, though I swore I read the other day that this is a particularly bad year for goalie prospects.

I certainly wouldn't do a premium draft pick every year on goalies. You have to fill six times as many forward positions and three times as many defensemen as you do goalies.

This isn't like offensive linemen where the shelf life is short and you have 8-9 spots to keep filled.

I see the logic behind the move but it seems strange that they are making this trade a month before the draft.  I know the Hawks have a crapload of picks so moving up 2 spots in the 1st and 4 spots in the 2nd seems logical but I doubt teams have a good feel for how the draft board is going to shake out at this point.  Whatever players the Hawks want may have been there at 1.20 and 2.54.

I'd have rather tried to use the surplus number of picks to trade to trade for veteran talent.

I'm just gonna plug it into a NFL trade chart and make my determination on that if it's good or not 😂

I’m pretty sure they know the draft board at this time. Trading up in the draft is kind of hard, so I’m glad they did. And the surplus picks would create a logjam of filler type players eventually. They can still trade a pick or two for veteran help.

Isn't there some rule they have to manage with holding too many prospects too?

You can only have 50 guys under contract. I have no idea where they are with that number but eventually they could get there with all the 1st, 2nd and 3rd round guys taken in successive years. Depth is great and necessary but at some point you hit diminishing returns.

I read that there was a considerable drop off in talent after the top 15-20, so moving up a few spaces could put them in a better position to get one before the drop off.

I assume that is a good thing?  I only watched a few games last year, but Vosters certainly didn't stand out as anything special.  I don't know anything about Rick Ball either, but this would seem to be a significant upgrade.

i didn't watch the games, but i know i lot of people thought Vosters was terrible

The Blackhawks feed came through on espn+ and nhl network and it wasn’t terrible, but it was quite bland. And weirdly inaccurate at times. I don’t know the new guy but he appears to be a season pro who should be an upgrade.
