Seeing as I have extremely limited hockey knowledge, are we expecting 2024 to be another dumpster fire where they're closer to sniffing the #1 pick than the last spot in the playoffs?

Feels like they are pretty much midway between dumpster fire and last spot in the playoffs.  These moves desperately help improve the team but still think they're lacking critical depth and while Bertuzzi and Teuvo are really solid offensive options, probably still lacking a true right hand man/second option for Bedard.

I could be off though, I wouldn't call my hockey knowledge extremely limited but I'm sure there's others here that have a better handle on things.

yes, but they are better than last year so i wouldn't count on a top 3 pick

Based on what Davidson has said publicly and the rumored trade offer of next years unprotected 1st rounder, the Blackhawks do not expect to be a dumpster fire. They’ve spent some money the past 6 months to stabilize the roster and could conceivably threaten for a playoff spot, but almost certainly won’t actually make it unless they get a surge of improvement from young prospects.

Looking at the roster as it stands now, it’s a real reminder that this team isn’t good. A lot of the pairings are at best league average. You can hope on that first line being good, but odds are it won’t be that great in comparison to others around the league unless Bedard rises fast. Teuvo and Bertuzzi are both 2nd line guys pushed to the top out of necessity. The 2nd line is terrible. The third line might be a decent third line but, could be worthless. The defense remains shaky, while the goalies might rate out as average. It’s a top heavy roster and the tops aren’t great. Lots of guys that wouldn’t play for contenders are going to get a bunch of minutes.

They should rise from lowest scoring team in league to maybe, top 20ish? They should have better depth once the inevitable injury bug begins since they can stash all the kids in Rockford instead of starting them at beginning of season. If Vlasic keeps getting better and Korchinski takes a leap without Jones falling flat they might have a strong blue line. It should be more fun than the past 4 years but they really are still a long ways away.

After the past couple of years, I take league average. At least the Hawks should be more watchable.

I meant their better parts are league average. The overall team is crap

This one is weird. They’ve spent a lot on similarly mediocre veterans, but the justification at the time was they were the only veterans. Now, roughly half of the team is old guys getting paid more than they would from a good team, because they have a veteran presence, but there is no room for young players to be mentored from these veterans.

I don’t like where this is going even if they aren’t seriously inhibited from getting better 3 years from now.

Do you guys have a preferred Hawks blogger/writer that actually analyzes all these moves? Used to read/subscribe to the Committed Indian pretty religiously back in the good years but those guys have all filtered away and now that they're finally trying again would like to get back into it, but feel like you guys do a better job breaking this stuff down than anywhere else I've found.

Lazerus and Powers from the athletic for the most part.

the nhl offseason is weird. The playoffs go deep into the summer then the draft and free agency goes by in a week. These guys joke that every hockey guy goes off to a cottage on a lake on July 2 as it’s all over now. There will be some stories coming out in august as camp approaches.

Tab is still around doing a good job over at bleachernation as their Blackhawks guy. Him plus the gents from the Athletic that everyone else has mentioned are my primary resources.

Somewhat surprising they signed their first rounder instead of him going back to Michigan State.

He’ll probably start in Rockford but a good chance to make nhl this season
