Ugh, Smyly is totally going to be the 5th starter isn't he?

Not necessarily. Most likely at least one game will be rained out in Chicago. Meaning one make up game will be played on Thursday. Brown can go Thursday.

I think it's less about Brown pitching tonight and not being rested and more about Brown pitching tonight and giving up more 100 mph line drives than he got outs.  That said, I think at least for next week it will be more about times through the order, and I suspect both Smyly and Brown will be asked to get 9-12 outs.

This is not a panic post but I really hope we're not sitting here in 6 weeks doing the "actually advanced metrics say we're good" again after digging an insurmountable hole

I don't think the metrics are going to say the cubs are good anytime soon

Well yeah, that would be an objectively bad outcome.  I don't see any reason to think it's more likely for the Cubs than any other decent team.

So far looks like a very poorly put together team.

It's basically the same team from last season, I think there's just 4 or 5 new players on the roster.

So, not sure why anyone would expect a different outcome this season overall.

There’s many reasons why the outcome might be different this year:

1. If you believe in the impact of a manager, the Cubs supposedly upgraded

2. Last year the Cubs fairly significantly underperformed their pythag record. Even if they played exactly like last year they should hypothetically have a better record.

3. The vaunted farm system is likely to have several guys ready contribute this year that were not ready last year

4. The usual luck related stuff like injuries can play a role in outcomes being different (so far so bad there)

5  The potential to do more at the deadline this year, with the assumption that the Cubs are more clearly a buyer

Other things I’m missing I’m sure.

Montgomery would have taken them over the second tax line. They were not doing that. I get your disappointment, but they were not going to be a team with a $260+ payroll. And it is hard to blame ownership for that decision. I think Chapman would have put them very close to the second line as well. So again, not sure they would do that, nor am I sure I blame them for not doing it. My issue is more about not giving the Guardians what was needed for Bieber. He would have fit in and been comfortable over line one but a decent amount of money under line 2. They have the prospects that could have made that happen. Of course, we don’t know what the Guardians were looking for. I would have liked another bat like JDM, Turner, Belt, Soler. All guys in the $12M to $15M range. But with them obviously not sold on Morel for 3rd that is a hard move to make. So we have what we have.

You could take Montgomery over Hendricks, who is making 16.5m this year.

Man I hate the camera angle at this park.  Reminds me of the time they tried to move the CF camera at Wrigley for the 2016 NLDS.

Only thing that's nice about it is you can see the movement on a LHP's pitches really well.  Would love if Imanaga had his start in Texas, but get to see Wicks on Sunday.

Feels like Morel should have caught that

Morel's fielding was just terrible the entire game at 3B.  Cubs defense looking a bit rough so far this year.

Counsell is used to winning 90 games with bad run differentials. Tomorrow the one run win comes.

He also had a good pitching staff and a killer pen.
