I thought it was strange that Sandberg wasn't at Cubs Convention this year, especially with the 1984 panel.  I don't think the prognosis is great for metastatic prostate cancer, but hopefully Ryno can beat this!

I'm sure i'm not alone here, but my 3 sports idols growing up were Jordan, Payton, and Ryno. Payton's death leveled me. This is a really tough one to beat but some have! Really hard news to swallow 😥

Payton was shocking because he was so young and seemingly invincible.  Sandberg is also relatively young, so at least he has that going for him, but it is going to be a tough road.  He was my original favorite Cubs player and is a guy I expected to be one of the primary representatives of the Cubs organization for many years to come, similar to what Ernie, Billy, and Fergie have been from the prior generation.  Here's to hoping that will still be the case.

This really sucks.  If it wasn't that serious he probably would have kept it quiet.  Hopefully he gets through it.

My medical degree from Google search says the 5 year survival rate for metastatic prostate is 34%.  I'm sure he'll have access to great care, and hopefully he can beat the odds, but it's advanced stage cancer. Prognosis can't be very good.

Ryno was my favorite athlete as a kid; my room was practically a shrine to him and the Cubs. I definitely don't feel the reverence for him now that I did when I was tween, but this still really sucks.

I am a less than a year younger than Ryno. So my heros were guys like Santo and Williams. But I still loved watching him play and the class he showed as a player. He was always very quiet and that was taken as boring during his playing days. But he really came out of his shell during his HOF speech. Since then he has been very engaging. I met him in 2017 at an event called “A Cup Of Joe” at Wrigley Mansion in Phoenix. After the Q&A session they announced the bar and sweet table were open. I went to the sweet table and the only person there was Sandberg. We talked one on one for 10 minutes. He asked me as many questions as I asked him. He also took a picture with me and thanked me for the conversation. It was like talking to a buddy. I came away so impressed by him. I really hope he beats this. And like someone else said, makes me really realize my own mortality!

Same.  Terrible news.

As I said in the other thread, my dad passed away about three weeks ago from cancer too. Ryno was his favorite player. He was at the famous Ryno game in the RF bleachers. So this hurts a lot. I hope and pray he can beat the prognosis odds and bounce back.

It’s a hard cancer because it is usually found late and in advanced stages, similar to Pancreatic Cancer.

Is it not typically discovered by a routine prostate exam?

When I was playing ball years ago, I always wore 23 and played 2B as my main position. So yeah this news sucks.

They say never meet your heroes, but I met Ryno when he was managing the Smokies. He was the nicest guy I have ever met. Beat this, Ryno.

My wife worked for a cancer nonprofit and says the one he has is one of the worst to get. I'm hoping he can pull through.

Ryno is always one of my favorites. I also wore No. 23 playing ball as a kid. A few years ago I got back into card collecting and sending to athletes through the mail. Sandberg signed and returned to me in like a week. I'll cherish it forever. I still have his Topps rookie card I bought when I was like 10 with all my allowance money.

I think it really depends on where it came from or where is spread to. From what I read, depending on where else it is he could have a 98% 10 year survival rate or a 34% survival rate for 5 years. And unless I missed it, no one has said where else he has cancer. I pray it is where survival is likely.

Ryno just announced on the Score’s Radiothon (raising money for cancer research) that he had his final radiation treatment and rang the bell this morning.

Thats so amazing.  Didn't his form of cancer have a pretty poor prognosis?  I thought we were gonna lose him.  Happy to (hopefully) be wrong.

I got in the car when he was in the midst of talking about it, so didn’t hear the full story, but he said something along the lines of his doctor told him if this was twenty years ago, his prognosis would have been extremely bleak for his particular form of prostate cancer. Recent research has apparently come a long way.

I just caught a short clip of the Sandberg segment.  He was really emotional, and understandably so.  Good for him, and good news for those of us who hope to see him around Wrigley Field for many years to come.
