I don’t even want him back but this makes me sad.  Such a unique situation that led to Fields possibly being done after 3 seasons. He hasn’t been particularly great but in almost any other situation he’s the Bears starting QB next year

I hate this thinking and it keeps popping up.

Fields will/should be gone next year because he's a bad QB.  He's statistically similar to a lot of other QBs who are losing their jobs this year and no one is blinking an eye.  It's perfectly ordinary and normal for him to be losing his job.

If he's gone, he's probably going to be starting for a team that didn't do very well last year, and we'll find out fairly quickly if you're right. I think he's going to be in the league for a while.

Kyle, people like him as a person. I think you can understand that.

Fields is an incredible athletic talent, but he’s not a great QB. Maybe he could have become great with better coaching, but it’s too late to find out.

People are starting to bend the stick a little too much in the wrong way because the team played badly against the Packers: No, this roster isn't a disaster and no we aren't very far from the playoffs.

Poles has actually accumulated a good amount of very promising talent: Moore, Wright, Stephenson, Dexter, Sweat, Gordon, Brisker, Roschon Johnson, the list goes on a bit more too. Thats actually a very good hit rate for two drafts and two offseasons.

If you get slightly better QB play you make the playoffs as a low wild card this year. (You also make the playoffs with slightly better defensive play down the stretch as well, but thats a more complicated fix ((and a less important one, IMO, in a much more offensive oriented league)) than upgrading at QB).

Go draft your guy, Poles. Let's see what you can do.

CJ Stroud is the outlier to the "never draft an Ohio State QB" rule. That school has QB after QB put up Heisman numbers against a scrub schedule, but most don't even get drafted, much less succeed. JT Barrett? Braxton Miller? Cardale Jones? Troy Smith?

Losing to Michigan every year gives a QB a chip on their shoulder coming out of college.

I think I’m down with Caleb/Maye and then Odunze at 9. I’ve been watching him a lot due to the game tomorrow and dude is a stud. I’ve seen some people say they like him more than MHJ though I’m almost certain they are just trying to say something controversial to get clicks. But they might not be that far off.

I reserve the right to change this opinion if he lights up Michigan and wins the championship tomorrow

Justin Fields is probably the most likable Bears QB of my lifetime in terms of who he is as a person.  Kind of a bummer to see him go, but we need more talent out of that position.

Luke Getsy is probably the worst Bears OC of my lifetime.  I can't wait til he is shown the door.

I don’t know man.  Shoop.

For me the gap between MHJ and Nabers is smaller than the gap between Nabers and Odunze, which is not to say at all that Odunze is bad. In most draft classes he's your top WR, but MHJ is a legit generational WR prospect and Nabers is a once every 3,4 or 5 years type of guy. Odunze still has legit #1 WR upside and would be a fantastic, and my preferred, get at #9.

I think, with great sadness, that Getsy is no worse than the 4th worst OC in my lifetime. Shoop, Ron Turner and Mike Tice we’re all markedly worse.

I barely paid attention from like 2016-2021 though, so there may be worse offensive minds there

Weird aside. Jordan Love's gf is the daughter of former NFL lineman Ron Stone. Her name is Ronika. Her siblings Ron Jr. And Ronna can relate.

George Foreman is not impressed.

We definitely will.  I think it's 50/50 even finds a starting job next year.

This is Gary Crowton erasure... sure the talent was abysmal, but his offenses average 15 ppg across 2 seasons.

Here is a question....who is the best OC the Bears have had since 2000 (roughly when Shoop started)?

I'm looking at the list and even people I would consider also kind of suck.

Adam Gase?  I think the whole story about him bringing an amazing transformation to Cutler/Bears offense was overstated.  They were maybe a slightly below average offense.  He did some decent things to get Cutler to move the ball more consistently but overall meh.

Mike Martz?  The offensive mastermind that traded way a HOF TE because he doesn't use pass catching TEs in his offense.  The offense was fairly solid but I still felt underwhelmed and his QB hated him.

Ron Turner?  Seems like a generic Madden OC.  Very vanilla, it wasn't terrible by any means but wasn't particularly good either.  Bears had a lot of success on the field with him but the offense in 2005 was mostly "don't let the offense horsefeathers up the game" style of playcalling. In 2006 it was being able to manage the game when Rex Grossman decided not to show up.

Edit: Looking at a list now.  Getsy, Lazor, Helfrich, Loggains, Gase, Kromer, Tice, Martz, Turner, Shea, Shoop.

I don't think this is the way the Bears will or should go, but is it possible they:

- Stick with Eberflus for next year

- Stick with Fields for next year and give him one more chance with some more weapons

- Trade down from the #1 pick for more assets including more picks this year and at least another 1st next year.

All this with the understanding that, if the Bears aren't good again next year, they will be picking fairly high in the draft again, plus they will likely have another high pick from whatever team they traded with.  So, if the team flops again next season, you can clean the coaching slate completely and use the multiple 1st round picks as ammunition to go up and grab a QB going into the 2025 season.

I don't love that idea, and I think we have seen enough of Fields to suggest it is time to move on, but I guess it really comes down to what they think of Caleb Williams.  If they aren't completely sold on him, and still have SOME level of confidence that Fields can improve, is it completely crazy to try this one more time with some additional improvements on offense and kick the can down the road on a QB decision?

Now that's not fair. There were also a bunch of awful toss plays that got blown up in the backfield too.

Well, the defense picked the play so what can you do?
