I feel like he's gonna turn and trade Johnson for a 3 now. IDK what to think honestly. Sweat is awesome and we need to stop letting QBs masturbate in the pocket like freakin Homelander.

Why don't you like good players though?

Because the NFL is a meat grinder on human bodies that tends to turn good plays into less good players faster than fans notice the players are good

- Hilarious thread title

- I’ve never taken any French lessons and read “the Bears will lose” will so…

- Sweat’s one of the most athletic pass rushers in the league, really excellent player. The reactions to he and Moore last year have me fascinated at how insulated NFL fanbases are, pretty much anyone good but not super mega ultra duper elite on one team is a mystery to the another’s fanbase

If Moore had been 27 with half a year of contract left, I wouldn't have wanted him either

Maybe we should have used a high pick on edge the last two years instead of burning them in mediocre or worse WRs and DBs

If I had a nickel for every time Ryan poles created a roster hole with absolutely terrible draft priorities, ignored that hole for an entire offseason, then overpayed to fix that hole by buying at the trade deadline when not in contention, I'd have two nickels.

Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.

There's no way they make this deal if they don't have a extension already worked out but...I still think its a bad idea to throw your 2nd round pick for him. And losing Jones hurts a ton.

I refuse to believe they make this deal if an extension isn't already there...nobody can be that dumb...can they??

18 months in age, and you're still doing the "paying them twice" on an existing deal as much as you are on a hypothetical new deal.

Obviously not exactly the same, but obviously these decisions exist on a spectrum, and they're two shades of same color and not black/white here like you're treating it.

Did DJ Moore get a contract extension and I missed it?

Wait, I messed it up, 6 months in age difference, not 18 lol

Decision tree for each:

2025 1st Round Pick (CAR)           2024 2nd Round Pick (CHI)
or           or
26.5 year WR            27.0 year DE
4 Y / $52M             4 Y / $96M

He had a big(ish) contract. That's still paying a guy twice yea?

I would describe his contract as significantly below market value for a wr of his caliber. That's what you're paying for, the difference.

When you're paying for the privilege of giving a guy his entire free agent contract, there's no difference.

Moore was 25.9 when the trade was made. I would lean towards the pick on both scenarios, but the first one is at least close.

The trade was made when we knew he wouldn't play ball for 6 more months so I'm not sure exactly how relevant pedanting over "age at time of trade" vs "age now" really matters.

Age at first snap for team:

26.42 v 27.19

I don't know if we should count first snap equally when we already know this season is lost and we didn't then

Well you are inserting a different question altogether then about whether you're allowed to buy in a lost year or not,  But its usually a pretty slippery slope to the "we're not x player away" arguments.  You do have to add good players.  The remaining games still do have value.

All the said, I think Sweat's value to a high second IS highly suspect.  I just don't think the broad sentiment against trading picks to get very good players.  To compound that and say, "well Moore was a good example and this isn't" ehhh. They're probably a lot closer than you're giving credit to.

Giving up a second is dumb when you could just sign him for no picks this off-season, he's not going to impact your ability to make the playoffs this season, and whatever improvement in the team he creates will just make it more unlikely you get one of the top picks to be able to draft a QB. Just dumb all around.

I get “they agree with Kyle’s faith in Bagent” vibes with this trade, meaning they think they can steal some wins and make that 2nd rounder closer to 40.
