1.5 games out. TB is 3-3 vs 2-5 for Bears  plus we lose the tiebreaker to them

But yeah kind of crazy to think that if they didn’t blow a 21 point lead to Denver they’d be 0.5 games out of a playoff spot

For those that are watching a lot of college QB tape, I'm kind of curious to see what you think of JJ McCarthy?  I am trying to fight through my bias, but I just don't see a ton of flaws in his game at all.

Strengths:  NFL arm and accuracy, is repeatedly putting balls into tight windows and leading his WRs for YAC.  Elusive and avoids sacks, he's not Lamar Jackson but running is absolutely a strong part of his game.  Strong leadership, poise, quiet but visible confidence that radiates to his teammates.  Handles pressure well, can step up in the pocket or scramble out of the pocket and complete long passes on broken plays

Weaknesses: Has NFL height (6'3'') but his frame is slender which leads to concerns about injury.  Has played behind an elite O-Line his entire career so while I have repeatedly seen him step up in the pocket, stay poised under pressure, etc, I haven't seen him have a game where he's getting rushed on most plays and don't know how composed he stays when that happens.  Can occasionally go on runs of inaccuracy (like the Bowling Green game) but seems to be few and far between these days. Also occasionally makes wrong decisions on RPOs leading to losses.

Rankings amongst all FBS QBs:

-1st in QBR

-1st in PFF grade

-2nd in completion percentage

-2nd in NFL QB rating

-2nd in YPA

Also one more cool stat: on 3rd downs this year he has 1 incompletion this year which was a drop by the WR.  Every other 3rd down throw this year has been a 1st down and/or a TD.

As most know, Michigan's schedule has been pretty terrible this year so fairly have to look at those stats with that in mind.  This year Michigan's running game has not been as strong in years past, so it will be interesting to see how he does vs. PSU and OSU this year when he'll be relied on to win the games much more than he had to in last year's games (at least for PSU, he absolutely had to pass to beat OSU)

I thought about a scenario in which Poles trades 1OA (Carolina') for an absolute haul, and drafts JJ McCarthy.  He'd probably be crucified by the Chicago media and fan base but, what if Bagent continues to play well?  Meaning, Bagent is Poles' QB, he found him, the fact that he's playing well perhaps, suggests Poles knows what to look for in a QB?  But, given how Poles has generally fucked things up I have a hard time believing he's competent at anything.  So, what we saw yesterday may just a blip on the radar, guess we'll see next Sunday.  I'm almost certain the Chargers are going to bring all sorts of blitzes testing Bagent' ability to execute hot reads.

Also, it sure would be a great story that a kid from a Chicago suburb helps to bring the Bears back to the playoffs and ends the nightmare vs. the Packers.

I think everyone needs to bear in mind that Bagent completed one pass over 15 yards in the air

He played a very efficient game within the confines of a very limited play call (which is a testament to Getsy! Good job buddy!) but no, I don't think he can be a starter by any means

yea, this is what I meant by saying the gameplan looked very John Shoopish. Bagent did well with it, but can he stretch the field with a 25 yard throw?

if only we could place this game execution into JFs arm to go with his deep ball....

what round would you draft him?

1st. Top 15. He’s going top 5 in some mock drafts I’ve seen today

A lot can and will happen in college football between now and the draft. If Michigan runs the table, McCarthy will be a big reason for that. Then the combine will be another opportunity for him. I have questions about his passing accuracy, but he is performing well within the system that Harbaugh uses.

It's really hard to project, but I'd say he's in the club of the top 5 QBs in college football.

not that I put a ton of faith in this site, they say #8 of all qb's

https://www.nfldraftbuzz.com/Player/JJ-McCarthy-QB-Michigan

He's had a pretty big rise the last month or so.  Not to say that he couldn't be the 8th best QB, there's a lot of great QBs out there this year and also QB scouting is fickle midseason unless you are a no doubt top 1-2 QB.  Plus I have obvious bias and not exactly a great history of rooting for great QBs so what I could be seeing as elite is really just very good.  I've been very impressed with what I've seen the last few weeks though (again albeit against not great competition).

I see mocks having him as high as top 5, as low as mid-2nd round. I appreciate the link, that's a pretty good outline of strengths and weaknesses though I think he's overcome some of those this year.  Looks like it was updated 3 weeks ago so fairly recent.

Here are a few mocks from the last week or so

Excited 2018 Nfl GIF by New England Patriots

He would have wore his Michigan ring too but its only a half ring so it keeps falling off.

Going into the Utah game

Against non top 25 defenses

70.3 Completion %

317.2 YPG

Against top 25 defenses

51.4 Completion %

172 YPG

6TD/6INT

What am I missing?

Apparently games against non-top 25 defenses. I mean, everyone struggles against top 25 defenses, that's why they are top 25 defenses.

The new great Chicago QB savior talk has started and it's as embarrassing as I expected. Apparently he's the Bears' Brock Purdy.

I dont know how fans can make that comparison with a straight face. Even if Bagent had Brock Purdy potential, Purdy went to probably the team most equipped to have a random 7th round rookie jump in and have immediate success while Bagent is in one of the worst places to see that happen.

Purdy has Deebo, Aiyuk, Christian freaking McCaffrey, a strong defense and an offensive mastermind head coach. Bagent has Moore, several other replacement level “weapons” and a big goof of a defensive head coach

Fair but given the vast disparity in talent level that you see in college, i would kind of guess that QB that people are seeing as a no doubt first overall prospect (not going to use the g word lest we start that discussion again) would be able to transcend the abilities of a great college defense. I could be very wrong though. Would be interesting to see a comparison of him vs some of the higher regarded college qb prospects in recent years.

I actually like McCarthy a lot. He's probably above Shedeur as my QB3 right now, and potentially is a top 10 pick. I fully expect Michigan in the national title game, so McCarthy will get a lot more exposure. I do worry about his frame. He's very slender, but it does look like he's added mass to his arms since last season. He kinda has a Derek Carr build (with a Zach Wilson face, this is a negative). I think he's probably your best bet to get the best of both worlds type of guy, between what we saw from Bagent yesterday and what we've seen from Fields in his better games. Can be a game-manager type when the gameplan calls for it. But I feel like he can push the ball downfield pretty well as well.
