The fact that Seiya is up to an .807 OPS, 118 wRC+ and 2.5 fWAR is just crazy. Since his return to an everyday player on August 11th we're looking at

99 PAs of .344/.394/.678, 8.1 BB%, 14.1 K% and a 184 wRC+.

Include his 3 hit game on 8/9 (8/10 was an off day) and it’s even more absurd.

Morel, Amaya, Wisdom are all hard struggling, this might be a low offensive output day. Hopefully Bellinger and Seiya can keep carrying.

This was sort of discussed in yesterday's game thread.  A day game after night game during a grueling part of the schedule (27 games in 27 days with the 1 off day and a doubleheader), makes sense to work in some of the bench guys I guess.  I'm not a big fan of Wisdom being on the roster but if he's here he's occasionally gonna get starts.  Amaya by virtue of being the only backup catcher now is naturally going to play on a day like today.  Morel is still struggling but maybe that jack last night gets him going.  Belli and Seiya are still in the lineup and hey Dansby is 5 for this last 13 so maybe he's snapping out of it a bit.

Should have done Canario at CF and Bellinger at 1B. So sick of Wisdom

Canario is the new Poochie. Matt Mervis has to go now. His home planet needs him.

Just looked up "Phantom Ballplayers".  There have been 2 players this decade who were placed on a roster for a longer period of time than Canario without playing (and then getting sent back down)

In 2021, pitcher Miguel Romero was called up by the A's on Sept 8.  He was optioned down to the minors on Sept 21st without appearing in a game.

Also in 2021, pitcher Steven Fuentes was called up by the Nationals on April 20 and sent back down on April 30 without playing.

Seems like the longest a position player stayed on a roster without playing is 5 days.

ugh, Wisdom

And playing first AGAIN.  Just cause you got away with it the last 2 times don't make it right.

David ross is dumb af

Is he bitter that Willson took some of his playing time in 2016 and vowed never to let that happen to another veteran?

Feels like he has some weird veteran bias or fetish.

Cubs have a wRC of 128 since Canario was called up. I'm personally more mad at the 'you can't call up two pitchers' rule. It sucks he's lost, like, 25 AAA PAs or whatever. He's also gotten to spend the week traveling with the team, the coaches, getting the MLB paycheck, seeing Wrigley in September, etc. If this was some 30 year old career minor leaguer on a AAA heater and we were depriving him of his shot to get a major league AB, sure, I'd feel bad. And yes, it's a little weird he hasn't gotten a throwaway AB in a blow out. But he's going to play in the majors. And I don't think there's a super convincing argument he's better than the guys who are playing now.

All true.  As I've said I'm not that upset about his lack of role.  But I'd love to see him get an AB at some point.  Heck maybe even a medium leverage AB in a situation where the matchup favors him...sometimes young guys have immediate success in the MLB as an unknown entity before the league gets a book on them.  Or he could come up there and swing at 3 terrible pitches and have anyone wondering why a most established player wasn't batting there.  Just never know I guess.

Except Canario. Ross is going to turn this into a running joke.

I don't know if you necessarily need to give them a ton of credit, but Jed and Co have basically taken care of all the problem spots they created on the offensive side of the roster. Hosmer, Mancini, Barnhart, etc. If you gave Canario a weeks worth of ABs for the Cubs and he went 231/231/577 (808 OPS), I think people would be pretty pumped about the power, and that's what Wisdom has done since August 1st as the 'weak spot' on the active/actually playing roster (not counting Mastrobuoni, who hasn't gotten an AB since 8/22). Everyone else is in a tough position to squeeze him in (Amaya/Gomes, Hoerner), had some time off and are playing well (Cody, Seiya, Madrigal to an extent), or are dudes with established track records used to playing every day (Happ, Dansby).
