It would probably cost as literal horsefeathers tonne of money, but a great creative architect might be able to make a multi purpose facility look aesthetically pleasing and functional. It makes more sense for the city to do something like that, than lay down for two new places.

I mean they thought that when cities first tried multi sport venues until people hated them and they didn't meet expectations.

I mean, literally a modern football venue is multi sport.  Theyll throw a tiny basketball court at midcourt and host a Final 4!  But an MLB and NFL team ain't sharing venues and the little bit of extra space requirement isn't exactly the issue.

The biggest issue is both Comiskey and Soldier Field projects sucked so badly.  Both of those, with ongoing upkeep, should have easily gone at least another 15-20 years if they had been done well.

nah, a good architect would build a good baseball stadium OR a good football stadium

They play in a publicly owned stadium that is 100 years old and was renovated (poorly) in 2002/03.

My God it’s been that long 😳

Another possible reason Arlington Heights may have caved:

"Illinois state representative Mark Walker, a Democrat from Arlington Heights, suggested in a written statement that one of the possible uses for the land he expects  might be a housing or welcoming center for undocumented immigrants arriving in the U.S"

Sounds like it's a village proposal and school districts still need to be on board too.

I'm guessing the village board is incentived to make sure a development happens as ancillary revenue from other taxes will largely go to them and be more significant than their piece of the property tax. The school districts on the other hand get their entire pie from property tax.  Yes a development with a larger assessed value could be a win, but understandably they have a lot more at stake at a favorable starting point in property tax assessment (among other issues, such as new housing, and thus new student population being part of proposed development)

I think for a while now the Bears were only serious about building in Arlington Heights, which is fine - it made the most sense and they can do whatever they want, own the place, and not have to squabble with the city and park district.

Arlington Heights will be fine and still get a lot of tax revenue from this thing (provided they don't give subsidies to building anything, god damn never do that)

Still can’t believe the Bears hired a President who is pulling them away from the land they bought in Arlington Heights

It feels like he's just playing the political game right now to appease the city/fans and they'll end up in AH long term.  He was overly gushy about Chicago in his presser at the meetings in Orlando and I think even he knows it was over the top.

I don't expect a stadium to be completed and open before like 2030

Which ever way they go there is likely going to be a law suit, so it may be longer than 2030.

For comparison, ground broke for metlife stadium in September 2007 and it opened in 2010.

Sofi 2016-2020.
US Bank 2013-2016

I think it’s fair to assume 4 years after ground breaks. And we’ll be lucky to break ground in 12 months

Lakefront Proposal Will Cost Taxpayers over $2bn

Quote

The team is set to reveal plans Wednesday for a $4.6 billion project to build a new enclosed stadium on the Lake Michigan lakefront area, according to the Chicago Tribune, with the team planning to pledge $2.3 billion to make it happen. That would leave Illinois taxpayers on the hook for $2.3 billion.

horsefeathers. That.

Since I don’t pay Illinois taxes I fully look forward to this

thanks guys

its all good, the state of Illinois is in fantastic financial shape so we're all happy to pay.

But seriously, I'm assuming a big fight is ahead and this is going to have to be voted on in November?  I'm not looking forward to all the discourse about this.

This plan is going to tank,

I kind of think so too.  I have no idea why they are pursuing this plan

The stadium looks ok I guess.  I wasn't too impressed with the exterior design, but inside looks cool even if its similar to the Vikings and Vegas stadiums.

Also LOL at Warren touting that the stadium can host World Cups in the future.  Great that will be fun in the 2070s or whenever the next US world cup is after being awarded 2 in the last 32 years.

Kevin Warren stinks. Everything positive going on with the football side including tomorrow night has been clouded over by his mismanagement. He loves the city of Chicago so much he is going to ask it to pay for his team’s stadium. Renting from the city and not being in charge of your stadium and asking the taxpayers for over $1 billion just doesn’t sound like someone who really cares about the city Chicago like he says he does.
