18-24 hours isn’t making a difference. Call the game. Playing tomorrow isn’t making a difference with these guys mental states.

If he lives and his condition improves, I could see them playing tomorrow. Anything else, I think they will play sometime in the near future.

This is just stupid doubling down on stupid. "Near future?" When? They have games scheduled for next week and are both in the playoffs. You planning on having them play 3 times in 7 days next week?

They will change the schedule to accommodate more off days if they have to. No they aren’t playing 3 times in 7 days.

They aren't going to modify the playoff schedule and, outside of that, there simply isn't enough time to work with. Both teams are already in the playoffs, so this is a pretty easy decision. Cancel the game and wherever the teams fall in terms of winning percentage is where they are seeded.

While acknowledging that this is the least important part of this situation, curious to see how fantasy leagues handle this as I'm sure there are a ton of championship games that are resting on this game given how many fantasy relevant players are on the 2 teams.

As a commish, I'd personally just call it however it stands. The two guys in my championship both have guys tonight, with one heavily favored. But oh well. Sure it's a freak absolutely unplannable thing, and any losers are welcome to cry about it.

If you have ever played a sport, has the idea that you may actually die ever crossed your mind? I watched that live, and it was just stunning and sickening. I know it's a violent sport but holy hell

Apparently this is his agent/rep

I don't really know what they means. I assume that's still critical condition?

Yes, the agent is just saying he has been intubated. Things are far from good.

Obviously being intubated is pretty damn bad, but his vitals stabilizing has to be a positive sign, no?

In theory yea, growing up I remembering hearing a kid a town, city, county over or national news story, whatever that a kid collapsed with a weird heart/underlying undiagnosed condition maybe 2-5 times. And to play middle and high school sports our school required us to have a physical to be cleared to make sure we had no heart or underlying stuff (or if we did make sure it was monitored/medicated/taken care of). So was something I at least remember hearing/thinking about as a kid.

I had a friend in college who played D3 basketball suddenly die of an underlying/undiagnosed heart issue.

In regards to his heart, probably. My initial concern was, how long did he go without oxygen when he wasn't breathing on his own.

I wonder how many of these players who have already achieved multigenerational wealth will go into this off-season with a different mindset because of tonight.

We've seen an increase of players retire in or before their prime due to possible long-term effects over the last 5 years, it should wisely increase.

Saw this posted by a doctor on another forum.

Yeah, but generally after a cardiac arrest, we won't extubate until the next day even if it looks like we are able to typically due to precautionary measures. So it doesn't necessarily mean he can't breath on his own. Also, depending on the attending managing him, if he is not completely up to date with the literature (within the last 2 years) they might still be cooling all cardiac arrest patients for 48 hours which typically requires these patients on mechanical ventilation and heavy sedation.

Long way of saying that we can't say one way or the other based on that tweet alone, but young age, near immediate CPR and early defibrillation are all very good prognostic signs.

Really hoping this is the case for him.

This is what my wife was saying to me. They were always going to intubate him and sedate him. And then it will be awhile before they truly see how he is. All the things that doctor listed are definitely good signs that give him a better chance than most of recovering, but it will take time to know for sure.

This really hits close to home, literally. Damar is a Pittsburgh kid. And by all accounts, a really good dude. I know when something happens, you only hear the good of the person, but in his case, it seems pretty genuine. His charity to provide school supplies and toys to children in need was apparently started before he became a pro. That Go Fund Me he started had a goal of $2500 and it's now over $3Mil in donations. Did 300K in like 10 minutes after it was posted on social media.

He went to Pittsburgh powerhouse, Central Catholic HS. Most famous alumnus is the legendary Dan Marino. Also Marc Bulger and Stefan Wisnewski. But he was recruited pretty much everywhere, but he chose Pitt to make sure his family could see him play and so that the community would have a local kid to be proud of.

That video of him hugging his mom before the game, really shook me. Like had no idea how much their lives were potentially going to change in the next hour or so. But I'm glad she was there and able to be with him instead of watching it on TV and getting excruciating info second hand. Not to make it about anything but Damar at this point, but last year (to the day actually) my nephew suffered a really bad ankle dislocation and it was rough to see his leg not pointing in the right direction on TV. My brother (his dad) watched it on TV before catching a flight to Tennessee right away. And that was just an ankle. Not a life or death situation. But with nephews that play (1 at the same level) and a son that is early on in his football career, it makes you think a lot if you want them to even play the sport.

I didn't even see this until I woke up this morning but still just want to say that I'm horrified and hoping he comes out of it OK.

Yea, I was just saying to my wife that I could see a bunch of players retiring this off-season.

The game will happen in the week between the conference championships and Super Bowl, and will retroactively affect the playoff seeding, such that the number of points each team scores in earlier playoff weeks gets matched up with whatever their new opponent is afterwards.

absolutely. in fact, youth sports coaches are required to do sudden cardiac arrest training.

with regard to Damar, a soccer player had a similar episode about a year and a half ago during a game. he is actually back to playing so hopefully similar outcome here.

Never once when I was playing, but absolutely once I had a son. I highly encouraged him to play every sport except football. He tried flag football when he was like 8 or 9 and said it wasn't for him, and I was perfectly fine with that. I never found the risk for serious injury or death to be worrisome when my daughter was playing softball or volleyball or when he played baseball.

is the lack of news bad?

Based on the things posted here and what I've seen elsewhere, no changes are good and we'll likely hear something tomorrow about him being taken off intubation and sedatives since that seems to be the normal protocol for a cardiac event like this.

This game should not be played. I don't think it will.

Baseball played a 60 game season and crowned a World Series champion. Big picture: this isn't that big a deal. Just accept that it's an unavoidable situation and let the playoffs fall where they may based on whatever modified metrics the league wants to put in place.
