This presumably shifts Jazz over to become the primary SS, which might make the Marlins more likely to have interest in Madrigal? I remember reading early in the offseason they wanted to improve their contact, not sure if they consider that mission fully accomplished after signing Segura.

Do the Marlins want Madrigal too? Arraez, Segura, and Madrigal all in the same lineup would be fun in a very throwbacky way

Don't love the trade for the Marlins. I guess I mildly get it - there's a ton of intrigue with Salas, so he may be the hope/upside they are banking on, but giving up a 2 years of a top young pitcher like Lopez seems to be buying high on Arraez, and I'm not a big fan of Arraez's profile as a consistent long term elite bat-on-ball guy. Maybe it's just the type - I admit to never doing a deep dive/look on Arraez to care, with all that I've been dealing with.

Curious who the third guy is. I'm more curious if other rumored offers gets leaked out, to see what they were comparing against.

Edit: Last guy's supposed to be Byron Chourio. Doesn't change the equation, but may sort of show with Salas and Chourio that they were looking for some high ceiling chips to go with Arraez. May.

Chourio and Salas went from Miami to Minny, didn't they?

Red Sox trade for Mondesi

Makes absolutely ZERO sense to me why a rebuilding Kansas City would trade Mondesi at his absolute lowest value for a middle reliever. I'm truly stunned. I would have taken Mondesi to be the Cubs everyday 3B (when healthy) for that return 10 times out of 10.

Mondesi is coming off a torn ACL, has one year to free agency, and is not a realistic option on an MLB roster at 3B with his punchless bat. Him having any value is predicated on being a plus defensive SS, and that's obviously going to be an open question coming off a knee injury and only having played 80 games of innings at SS(with decidedly not-elite metrics) since the start of the pandemic.

Yeah the real answer here is the Royals should have traded him a year ago. Missed opportunity to get a real return.

I'm generally of the mind that age is just a number for pitchers but that still seems like a monumentally bad idea.

I think this may be more a LT move and also a way to smooth out some money for a Machado extension.

From MLBTR:

The Diamondbacks have agreed to a reunion with Andrew Chafin, as the veteran left-hander will rejoin his original team on a one-year deal with a club option for the 2024 season. Chafin will earn a $5.5MM salary in 2023, and Arizona’s club option is worth $7.25MM (with a $750K buyout). Up to $1MM in bonus money is also available for Chafin if he makes at least 55 appearances in 2023.

Sounds like a great deal for the DBacks.

Cool trade

Can't believe we couldn't have matched/topped that offer for Puk. Within a few hours, we could have solved our LHRP problems with either Puk or Chafin.

This is almost certainly a bad deal for the Padres. At the same time, I would love it if it were my team. At this point, the Cubs basically need to sign Ohtani for infinite money for the rest of his life.
