Cubs twitter really is something else. Jake DeGrom signs and it’s like whoooooa so much money glad it’s not Us all that risk

Christian Vazquez signs elsewhere and the FO is stupid and cheap and lazy and all the bad things

The same people don’t even think the Cubs are scheduled to compete until 2025 no matter what happens, can’t conceive of signing anyone but Corrra and Support Pieces (a phrase in use most likely!) rotfl. Unbelievable

Correa is not going to happen, granted an overpay is required to get one of the SS's but, the type of overpay required for a Correa is not one Jed's going to execute. Swanson will also require an overpay but, it'll be in money not years, if Jed signs a SS at all, it'll probably be Swanson. Although I'm still leaning towards nothing in regard to signing a SS.

I don't see a meaningful difference between "worried the money will dry up" versus "worried the money will dry up unless the Cubs hit some undetermined benchmark of performance"

Same. When I read Shadev’s response, I thought, “yeah, that’s basically what he said you said.”

A distinction without a difference. But it speaks to the Cubs culture even if it's partly true. If jed doesn't trust ownership to spend down the line and ownership doesn't trust Jed to spend "intelligently" why is he still employed by the Ricketts?

No.

Dom is saying he reported Jed was afraid it will dry up. He responded that what he was speculating it would be natural to have that concern in the back of his head. He wasn’t reporting Jed had that concern, but Dom made it sounds like he did.

I like the focus on defense from an otherwise inconsequential signing…Productive MiLB hitter but at 28 probably not the point, started out in the D’Backs org

Yeah if he's actually a plus defender, an OF with that glove plus 30/36 SB and decent AAA batting line is a nice option to have in Iowa. Especially considering the existing options don't have the same strengths.

If they miss Correa and Swanson the uproar is going to be huge to the point where someone, probably Jed, is going to have to be the sacrificial lamb.

They'll just cut/can Ross as he's struggling to manage a bullpen and catch 55 games.

They won’t fire him this offseason. But I have to think he has to be on the hot seat unless he swings a trade for Tatis or something.

If he doesn’t get either guy I may have to buy a cubs convention ticket just to see the atmosphere

I'm sure Jed won't get a warm reception but the owners will always be the scapegoats.

Jed HAS to be pissed at Crane for putting him in the hole by saying all that horsefeathers just before the winter meetings. But anything Crane says comes directly from Tommy Boy Ricketts. I don't imagine there is a lot of trust right now from the baseball opps people.

If Crane/Ricketts/business side have all this money and want a big move they should just step in and push Jed away. Obviously not a healthy environment between business side and FO side, but if that’s what they want they cut the checks and a signing like Correa takes a Ricketts/business side sign off. So just step in and deal with Boras directly and get it done if they want that with the public comments about money and contending.

I don't know that I'd have the restraint to keep myself from flipping off Ricketts if I ever saw him, so I'm pretty sure it's best I avoid the convention.

Completely agree. If I was Jed I'd be pissed off at the ownership right now. I'd also be out there signing lots of sweet FAs but that's beside the point.

If you're Hoyer, why not spend? Ownership is publicly telling you to. So your options are spend a bit recklessly and face the repercussions a few years from now or spend nothing and likely get canned at the end of the year.

he's probably trying to, but nobody wants to come to the cubs for whatever reason
