Men’s short track 1000 meters. In both semi finals, a South Korean skater got DQ’d on questionable calls allowing a Chinese skater to advance instead. So the final ended up with three Chinese skaters and two Hungarian skaters. Oh and the two Hungarian guys are actually Chinese.

Then in the final a Hungarian guy wins the race but gets not one but two penalties allowing a Chinese guy to win.

Nothing fishy about that at all.

While the South-Koreans and Chinese are fighting, this is how the Low Countries do it:

US climbing the medal count now, 2 more yesterday in women's Bobsled including gold. That gold was assisted by a Canadian (Kaillie Humphries) who expatriated to the US right before her event, and she was way, way better than any of the others in the field.

I've been watching more of this than I thought. It's become bedtime TV watching because that's when the live feeds are on, mostly.

I was wondering why someone who had won medals for Canada in multiple Olympics would repatriate and compete for the US so I googled it. She was apparently the victim of repeated verbal abuse from Canadian officials so she decided to apply for US citizenship and got it.

Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir throwing some shade about the Kamila Valiyeva situation:

The crux: Valiyeva had a positive drug test for doping for three separate medications, but the IOC didn't learn this until she was already at the Olympics. Despite disqualifying every other athlete that has had a positive test in the past, they are allowing her to perform anyway, and just won't do a medal ceremony if she wins. She claims it was accidental and she didn't know what she was taking, but Lipinski (and Weir, but Lipinski specifically winning at the same age) is well aware of the drug testing and that this kind of thing could never be accidental. Even if the athlete didn't know what she was taking, the Russian federation definitely knew what was up, and the IOC is just letting them get away with it for no punishment.

Didn't the Court of Arbitration for Sport require that the IOC let her compete? I haven't followed this closely but my understanding was the IOC wanted her out, and the lack of medal ceremony is their symbolic objection to the ruling.

That's pretty wild commentary from Lipinski and Weir, who generally traffic in trying to find the most creative words possible to praise pretty much every skater they see. (Weir apparently did not say a single word during the actual performance.) I like that they're not pulling punches about this.

They didn't really punish Russia last time when it was clear they engage in complete and total, systematic state-sponsored cheating. The "ROC"? What a joke. Of course they continued doing it, why wouldn't they? So this is not surprising at all. What really sits badly with me is that other athletes are punished, just not Russians (Sha'Carri Richardson for example). Maybe Richardson should have lied and said some weed was accidentally inhaled at a club or something.

US and Canada mens' hockey teams were both eliminated.

The Womens' teams face off for gold tonight. It's usually a good matchup. US dominated play but still lost last time.

I was bummed last night. Thought we had it after 2.

Looking forward to tonight.

Or perhaps the IOC was challenging and objecting as a way of deflecting from the fact that they knew full well her sample was taken and delayed, and why...

Valieva completely imploded in the long program and fell off the medal stand, so there will be a medal ceremony after all. Might be the all-time 'ball don't lie' moment, although it feels icky having it come at the apparent expense of the mental well-being of a 15-year-old, whether she was aware she was cheating or not.

I have been watching Icarus on Netflix. It starts with an amateur cyclist/filmmaker trying to blood dope as a documentary. He ends up working with the Russian Director of Anti-Doping who shows him how to beat all the tests. He outlined in clear detail how Russia swapped samples at Sochi which led to the ban at Rio by WADA, which ultimately was pulled back by the IOC. It's really aggrevating to see them clearly skirting the rules with no punishment. There was a tweet abut Richardson being disqualified and Valiyeva not - totally unfair
