Guess what 32 idiots who own NFL team did this offseason...

Dolphins hired Mike McDaniel, who I had never heard of until nuDeadspin ran an article trashing the idea of hiring him because he was "another white guy" even though he is biracial and has been quite open about it

I hate to bring race into this but when the Flores suit came out, it was widely believed Josh McCown was the frontrunner for the Texans job. There was previously a lot of heat on the Texans for firing Culley after one season, but it increased when it was a prominent example in the Flores lawsuit. Now McCown is apparently out of the running and their finalists are Flores and out of nowhere Lovie? I'm very happy if it means that the Texans make a minority hire, I'm just not going to praise the Texans for it.

100% what it is. Texans owner has been accused of being racist on many occasions. They obviously weren't going to hire Flores, who has too much heat surrounding him right now. But they hired a black coach so he they have a leg to stand on against racist allegations. Of course, it all makes no sense when they fired Culley after 1 year, just to hire his DC and retain Pep Hamilton as OC. They are likely bringing back most of the staff outside of the head coach.

Dennis Allen named HC of the Saints. They’re 100% not going for the rebuild ESPN seems to be projecting. They’re counting on better health and running it back out there in a wide open NFC South.

How are they going to get under the cap? I know they’ve been excellent at maneuvering contracts to make it under the cap but at some point they have to pay the Piper. Figured it would be this season. The NFC South may be wide open but do they have a super bowl contending roster?

They don’t have a qualified big 10 qb, let alone NFL.

They have a ton of guarantees and roster bonuses they'll restructure to push out. I mean, yea at some point they have to pay the piper so to speak. They probably will have to make some tough cuts this year. If Loomis wants to reign it in and not hand out too many back loaded contracts this year, they could probably be back well under the cap for 2023.

Using OTCs calculator I got them to about 7M in space with 78M projected for next year. Maybe need to free up a little more space than that. A guy like Thomas is the interesting type of choice. Only 2M in immediate cap relief, but 16M in base salary you can save. And you can June 1 him to give yourself all the in season room you'd need. Granted that is with plenty of holes for 2022, but this would be the perfect year for a reset right? Let every good FA walk, replace them with minimum players, and collect some comp picks for 2023.

That said, you can do stuff like restructure Thomas and laugh at the idea of resetting the cap all while handing out the type of FA deals they been known to do and keep most of their good players and figure out later where the exit ramp is. They've done it this long. Last I looked they have 261M in unaccrued guarantees and dead hits whereas the median team has about 150M and the smallest is at about 115M (Philly actually has even more future dead hits and guarantees to accrue).

The Saints cap woes are nothing compared to last season when they had to let Trey Hendrickson walk. The will do what they always do, restructure deals and give out salaries as roster bonuses. A lot of local writers are predicting that they won't have to let anyone at all walk this year. The one real question is if they're going to pay Armstead, who is an All-Pro type LT but can't stay healthy.

That defense is Super Bowl caliber, and the offense when healthy can be enough. My prediction is that they sign Jameis Winston on a 2 to 3 year incentive laden deal, draft a WR and sign a Ridley type WR from Atlanta, draft an OL and run it back out there.

If Corral or Pickett is still there at 18 then they have to draft one of them. It's probably a moot point since neither will be there, but still.

I mean Armstead would be the big one.

But if they just go straight restructure route they'll end up eating into all their space again next year. If they make a few cuts, they can actually operate with some space in 2023. I don't know how much they believe in the D, but they don't have any real answer at QB and with Payton gone, now would be the year to kind of tank it a little. They still have plenty of younger pieces they could build back around as quickly as 2023 if they find a QB over the next 2 offseasons. Take it from a fan of a team who had a SB caliber D one year, it can be awfully fleeting.

Cut Taysom Hill for sure (this simply has to be done). Try and trade Armstead or maybe even Kamara to both free up money and move up enough in the draft to ensure you get one of the QB's. Winston is only due 3 million so I think you may as well keep him. But the credit card bill is finally due for the Saints. Hell, keep Winston as the back up next season and play the rookie. May as well.

Eh, they're kind of stuck with Hill. 90% of his hit is guarantees for 2022. Armstead they can't trade unless they franchise tag which would be incredibly tough. If they keep Armstead its on a back loaded deal. Winston has a 3M cap hit, but it's a void deal. So he is actually a FA unless they agree to an extension.

The "credit card bill" (I hate that term) isn't due due, but if I was them I'd priortize by restructing mostly the young guys and cut some of the older ones. They can explore trades too, but they have a hard deadline to get under the cap before the league year starts, and they cant make trades until them. So timing can get dicey.

There's a chance Taysom may never be the same with his foot injury, so him being cut is a given, IMO.

The Saints D has been at a championship level for about 4 years now, and the core is locked up on that side of the ball (pending a resigning of Marcus Williams, which is expected). Saints FO believes the D will be their bread and butter for the next few years anyway, and an even decent offense makes them ready for a deep playoff run.

Count me as strongly in the Jameis is the future camp. He is only 28, and when he got hurt he had led the team to 5-2 with 14 TDs 3 INTs. This with the absolute worst WR corps in the NFL and no real TE to speak of. They shore that up and this is a SB contending team.

Credit card bill is finally due? Not buying that at all. They will do what they always have done and likely be adding, not subtracting this offseason.

Two hypothetical extremes. Cut everyone over 29. Restructure everyone under 28.

12M of space for 2022 and 96M of projected space in 2023.

Or just restructure everyone :

24M in cap spade in 2022 and negative 10M of space in 2023. Now they'll have plenty of room to defer and restructure more deals in 2023 so that's not necessarily problematic, but there's definitely some room between those extremes where some of those cuts may make sense. The specifically operate in a way where they plan to do these restructures. I'm actually a huge fan of Loomis' cap management, but at a certain point can verse should with cap decisions is a legit question IMO.

Ok ya, screw it. Y’all are right. I would like to see at least one full season of Jameis with this team as it is currently structured. Plus we would also get Michael Thomas back.

I still maintain that they need to draft a QB in the first, if practicable.

MF, no! This team is desperate for a playmaking WR even after Mike Thomas returns. You sign Jameis and you can sit a year. If Jameis sucks then you go for a QB in a better draft next year.

Side Saints note - very interesting that Loomis met with Bienemy last weekend for 8 hours then hires Allen the next day. Also, Chiefs announce today that his contract expired. Saints OC Bienemy?

I know I’m biased but if Matt Corral is there you better take him. But alas, after combine and pro day I doubt he falls past the top 10.
