The Guggenheim Group is also in a different stratosphere of wealth/resources.

No, they are not.

Yes, they are. They roughly purchased the Dodgers IN CASH for what the Ricketts family is worth. This isn’t apologizing for the Ricketts but The Guggenheim Group blows them away.

They don't own the Dodgers. Mark Walter owns the Dodgers along with a few others. They used a similar name as his other company.

Again, the difference between the Dodgers and the Cubs is that the owners put winning on the same pedestal as making money.

Don’t hate it, don’t love it. He’s a weird player that has some really nice seasons and really bad seasons over the last 5 years.

Cubs lead the league in backup caliber infielders. Not a starter in the batch.

Stocking up on fungible assets for the trade deadline. That seems to be their mode of operation now. Put half a team out to play for half a season and see what you can reel in come July 31.

Everybody saying this means no Correa, which is probably true anyway, but not because of this signing. This guy isn't a starting SS. They still don't have a starting SS on the roster. They do not have an impact bat on the roster. This guy most likely will be the starting 3B for half the year. Bote is hurt and quite possibly out a long time. Wisdom is Wisdom.

They've got a glut of bench players and there has to be some shaking up to come out of that soon. And they have plenty of room to add a Correa or Story.

I think most don't have much of a hope anymore, but does this effectively confirm we're out on Correa? Or not really a factor either way?

I agree with Goony. It shouldn't affect the pursuit of Correra one way or the other. But I question whether they were really ever in on him in the first place.

It probably isn't a factor but we sure seem like we have a lot of infielders on the roster for a team that might theoretically add another one.

I think we can safely say hope is dead at this point.

Interesting, I wasn't expecting Villar at this point. Decent insurance for Wisdom I guess.

Looking at the roster, I tentatively expect Frazier to start the year in the minors since he still has an option.

You make room if you get Correa to sign, neither Simmons or Villar are long term or significant pieces you can tell them to get lost. Named After Maddux suggested on Twitter this might portend a Wisdom trade, but I can only see that if they did get Correa and probably not even then.

At this point I’m not sure if I expect anything else of significance, the season starts in 22 days and they just aggressively filled out the roster over the last 48 hours. Doesnt mean there can’t be a Correa signing or a Hosmer trade or something like that, but I think these moves are representative of Jed’s optimism that something bigger is coming.

Worse than Rizzo? Unpossible.

When he was with the Astros as a youngster, he was the epitome of poor baseball instincts. The anti-Javy. I presume he's gotten some better with age and experience, but that's probably not a strong suit.

While this shouldn’t stand in the way of Correa, as has been mentioned the whole infield is second division starters, there still is a roster crunch. So I wonder if we end up doing the Hosmer trade if some combo of Wisdom/Nico/Madrigal/Rivas/Ortega/Happ/Alcantara is involved since Tatis and Cronenworth are banged up and that free’s up a spot for Correa.

They're not out on Correa because they signed Villar, but they wouldn't have signed Villar unless they were pretty sure they were out on Correa.

My guess is they're leaving the door open on a Hosmer deal, and probably looking for another SP (Brault seems destined for first man up from Iowa status) but this is the team.

If this is the team, what is the point in trading for Hosmer?

Essentially buying a prospect(s). It’s not really even about Hosmer. It’s bailing out the Padres.

His bat would be a very slight nice to have for the bench, but the 'why' always has been and always will be the goodies that would come with him. You'd presumably be getting Robert Hassell or Luis Campusano, either one being our clear #2 prospect, and an MLB ready SP in either Chris Paddack or Ryan Weathers.
