two man bench the rest of the game because the dumb ass cubs insist on carrying a billion pitchers. can’t wait for rex brothers to have to hit for himself with the cubs down 10-9 in the 9th.

so, none of the position players can hit either.

Losing this game would definitely be the end of the season.

Shall I compile a list of teams that have overcome 6 game deficits with half the season to go?

I mean I'm not saying the Cubs are a good team primed to crawl back to the division lead, but 6 games over 81 games with the easiest remaining schedule in baseball is not as daunting as you seem to be implying it is.

again, they only have 81 games to make it up if they don’t have a fire sale.

This is going to be one of those games where the first couple of innings are zany, and then no one scores until someone on the Brewers hits a walkoff in the bottom of the 9th

Only if you also compile a list of teams that failed to overcome 6 game deficits with half the season to go.

Even at full strength and firing on all cylinders, this is a seriously flawed team. The offense and bullpen might be good enough to carry them into the playoffs in a weak division, but that's about the extent of it.

man if I were rex brothers it would drive me insane to know that I cost myself literally millions upon millions of dollars because I couldn’t horsefeathering throw strikes.

No doubt about it. My point was that the season isn't over if the Cubs fall back 6 games on July 1. It's not great but this is not a must win game. The Cubs are a very flawed team, but also have just finished an impossible portion of their schedule (21 of 29 games on the road, all of the road games against current playoff teams) during a stretch where they've had several key injuries (Hoerner, Duffy, Bote, now Rizzo, Bryant banged up, Trevor Williams, Alzolay, etc). If those guys come back soon, they will be rewarded with the easiest remaining schedule in baseball with a disproportionate number of games at home where they are 26-13 this year.

To your other point, does it matter if they win the central since they clearly aren't a legit contender? I guess...the other option is rooting for them to be bad enough to sell and that sounds less fun though more prudent.

Speaking of lists of teams, I'd love to see the record of teams that score 7+ runs in the first inning of a game. Has to be something like 546-4 or something.

how many times has a team used a position player to pitch because they’re getting stomped in a game that was tied in the 8th inning AND in a game they led by seven runs within three days of each other?

Holy horsefeathers. I figured the Brewers were nipping at their heels, like, 7-6 or 7-5, and then I looked up the actual score and guffawed out loud like the goober I am. It's bonkers there are people here who thinks the Cubs should do anything anything except this carcass for parts.

the only reason I’m not anxious for them to hurry up and sell is because the guy in charge of making these deals that will alter the entire franchise for the next 5-8 years has shown himself to be completely inept.

Reminds me of this game in 2004:

https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHN/CHN200407200.shtml

Cubs were thought to be contenders in 2004, but were struggling coming off a 3-8 stretch and playing the 1st place team trying to stay afloat in the division. In this game, the Cubs scored 7 runs in the 2nd inning and it felt like ok at least we'll get this one and get some momentum back. Instead Pujols hit 3 HRs and the Cubs lost 11-8

Prior to the game, no, it wasn't. After the 7-0 lead, you bet your bottom dollar it was must win.

Not that I was complaining but this season's fun May always felt a little fool's gold-y to me. It's a .500/mediocre team and I hope they sell off everything that isn't bolted down. Bullpens are fluid year to year, so I have no attachment really to any of these guys who have performed well so far.

Bring back Schwarber and Yu!

Try, but then at least that gets him closer to being fired. Though then the people hiring his replacement are the horsefeathering Ricketts.

So the Cubs are doomed.
