nothing seems more inevitable than him to the Cardinals for a couple of, to quote Blake Snell, slapdick prospects

Hopefully their tight assness keeps them from adding him.

They’re paying $103MM to six players all over 31 years old this year. I don’t think it’s their tight-assedness that is going to keep them from trading for Arenado.

What do you mean? They’ve been crying poor/saying they have little money for moves about as much as we have been the last two years and they have imposed on themselves a much smaller ceiling for payroll.

It's weird that we don't know anything else about this trade yet, over an hour later. Derrick Goold chimed in that the Rays like Tyler O'Neil, but that's all I've seen. I'm worried that it's some giant 3 team trade.

I'm a little confused by how much Liberatore is being hyped up in the broader discussion on the deal. He's a first round pick and had a good first full season in the pros, but he's currently a middle of the Top 100 guy in the lists that I can see. Fangraphs has him a FV 50 and between Hoerner and Ademan on their Top 100. A worthwhile prospect but hard to see an A ball pitching prospect of that caliber being a coup, almost regardless of what they gave up to get him.

I'm irrationally pissed off a solid prospect like Liberatore is going to the Cardinals of all teams. I know he's still a bit away but he seems like someone who is gonna make it for them and give us fits for years.

Source confirms: #Rays getting Jose Martinez, Randy Arozarena and a Comp A pick from #STLCards for Matthew Liberatore, a catching prospect and a Comp B pick. First reported: @JeffPassan.

JMart,Arozarena, Comp A for Liberatore,Comp B and a low level catcher. I don't get it at all. TB has a DH in Shogo and that's ignoring Martinez just isn't very good

Doesn't move the needle much either way. Like TT said Liberatore is a nice prospect, but nothing crazy, and then Martinez and Arozarena are nice complimentary guys who fit a little better in Tampa.

Martinez is terrible in the field but the dude hits every time he's in the lineup. He's not gonna get you 30/100 or anything but he'll probably hit .280+ and OBP .350+ with a decent slug.

"Blockbuster"

The 2020 Rays are an improved team and the 2020 Cardinals got worse. Liberatore's a quality SP prospect but he didn't get out of A ball this year some of that being org philosophy some because of a back issue. It's funny that Faustino Carrera is probably going to take Liberatore's High A rotation spot, obviously Theo set a trap

Now if they were to package Liberatore in a deal for Arenado....

I think this more means they’re bringing Ozuna back or signing Castellanos more than a Arenado trade

Irrational feeling that Castellanos would rake against the Cubs all season if he goes to StL.

Yeah, I agree, most likely Ozuna resigning.

Is that how you would describe Heyward, cuz...

Heyward 2019 - .251 .343 .429 .772

Martinez 2019 - .269 .340 .410 .751

The Cardinals just got a top 50 20 year old LHP prospect for a bad 31 year old DH and a 25 year old who didn't hit until the juiced ball PCL (his 2nd time around).

I'm a Cards fan, but this trade is an obvious win.

Womp womp. Best of luck dude

Diamondbacks signed RHP Trevor Clifton to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Clifton had spent his entire professional career in the Cubs' organization after being selected in the 12th round of the 2013 draft. He reached Triple-A last year and registered a 5.18 ERA with an 84/50 K/BB ratio in 99 innings over 24 appearances -- 20 of them starts. It would be an upset if the 24-year-old was anything more than depth for the Diamondbacks' organization this summer.

I predict the Cubs will sign a couple of players today.

They'll be their own arb guys, but hey it's something.

Here are the MLBTR arb projections for the Cubs:

Kris Bryant (4.171) – $18.5MM

Javier Baez (4.089) – $9.3MM

Kyle Schwarber (4.086) – $8.0MM

Willson Contreras (3.108) – $4.5MM

Albert Almora (3.073) – $1.8MM

Kyle Ryan (2.139) – $1.1MM

Total - $43.2M

I'm seeing the team as $2-3M over the tax line at these figures, so I think today is going to determine whether or not the FO will look to cut salary another way in the event that they do end up holding on to KB.
