The latest story is Pineiro wanted the ball in the center of the field for that kick, and had it been in the middle of the field, he would have made it. Instead, it was hiked from the left hash mark and the ball went wide left. Herein lies the problem. Mr. Pineiro has basically just thrown Nagy under the bus by explaining this detail to the media. So on top of bad play calling, it appears that Nagy may be losing his team. But, let's go back to the 43 second mark where the clock was stopped on a Charger time out where Coach, QB and anyone else involved with decision making processes were huddled on the sideline discussing what to do. We already know that running or passing was not an option because Nagy declared that to be so. Let's just take a knee and kick. Absolutely no thought of asking the kicker where he would like the ball placed? Even if they didn't think about it at that time, maybe while the clock was slowly winding down someone could have said, hey, where do we want the ball? There were still two plays to get the ball where the kicker preferred it. Nagy should have already known where Pineiro prefers to kick from.

Yes, I'm very bitter about this loss.

a 41 yard fg kick should be placed left, center or right in the NFL and be pretty close to a gimme, so Pineiro can kiss my ass. That doesn't excuse Nagy, he's an idiot for not trying for more with that much time left, but it sounds like Pineiro is just saying horsefeathers to provide cover for himself.

A 41 yard FG is in no way shape or form a gimme.

in the nfl its pretty damn close to a gimme. if you're less then 80% from that distance you're on the bottom 1/2 of the league. Pineiro Dinero is at 50%, the bottom 1/3 of the league fwiw

who said it was?

in the nfl, a fg kicker should be very reliable from 41 yards out, from the left, center and right. its a dumb argument and only makes sense since he sucked and missed the fg

the Bears suck at every level of offensive play out side of the supposed "crappy" skill players (some other posters assertion - not mine)

qb sucks

coaching sucks

o-line sucks

fg kicker sucks

te play sucks

at least the wr's and the rb's have shown some talent and promise

You know what else is a near gimme in the NFL? Not fumbling the football on a run. Not losing yardage on a run has to be pretty good too, especially in comparison to a 80% success rate of a kick.

And don't forget - the Bears lost 2 yards by taking a knee, so all they have to do is not fumble or lose 3 yards for it to be the right move.

Sorry, so also not pretty damn close to a gimme.

well, yes, actually it is pretty close to a gimme. the 80% is fgs from 40-49 yards. clearly a 41 yarder is easier to hit then a 49 yarder and if 80% is the average overall, I'll stick my neck out ans say a 41 yard fg in the nfl is pretty damn close to a gimme.

39-44 is 77% this season

80% means 1 out of every 5 misses, which means it is not a gimme. Those kicks are missed every week. There is a reason extra points were moved back, because those are not gimmes.

2 for 4. Good sample size.

its all we have to judge on unfortunately. sure, he can get better, he SHOULD get better. but he might not, he might be horsefeathers forever!

Well he was also 12 for 15 from 40-49 in college and 5-5 from 50+. Probably some preseason stats we can round up too..

Or he's at least as good this year from 40-49 as the guy that 80% of Bears fans wanted to trade for.

Robbie Gould? Gould, is old. Sorry for the rhyme but he was due for a regression.

and look at that, Pineiro has proved to be damn close to a gimme at 80% in the past. what gives? was there a hard right-to-left wind that Nagy just couldn't feel? Weather report says the wind was sw 6 mph, so that shouldn't have been a significant factor. Maybe it was the sun being too bright on the left hashmark. Video replay says nope it was sunny everywhere on the field.

he flat out miss-aimed his kick. he sucked and collectively the Bears sucked. THAT my friends, is a gimme.

How many times has Pineiro been put in the position of having the game ride on his leg in the NFL? Yes, he should have made the kick, but it’s not a gimme, especially with the win if you make lose if you don’t pressure. Nagy should have done something to make the kick closer. They had no problem getting the ball into field goal range. Momentum is on your side. Momentum was stopped dead in its tracks the moment they took a knee.

.... Nagy should have done something to make the kick closer. ,...

I'm not saying Nagy shouldn't have, he definitely should have done so. That's why (among other reasons) Nagy sucked. But I cant forget that Pineiro should be able to nail that kick. One stupid decision/mistake piling onto another stupid decision/mistake is the recipe for a perfect disaster.

A 41 yard FG is in no way shape or form a gimme.

Kickers were ~87% on FGs between 35-45 yards in 2018 (295 of 340).

85% on 154 attempts between 41-43 yards.

James Harden is 85% from the FT line. It's like him missing one with the game on the line. I don't know how we're defining "gimme" but, all else equal, it's not really *expected* when someone misses from that distance.

If we're parsing down kick percentages from different lengths, we should include a stadium factor. Soldier Field is not a dome.

This is true. Another reason why it’s silly to not just give yards away.
