Fiiiiiiine. Do you think a stipulation is Ross has to hire someone with experience as bench coach? I feel like he wouldn't get total say in his assistants.

Isn't there a pretty good chance the hitting and pitching coaches stay the same? I'd guess he'd get some input for some part of the staff. Might as well be somebody he has a history with, like Fredi Gonzalez.

I was starting to prefer Espada, but I don't think he was the slam dunk he was being billed as.

The main thing will be his lineups and bullpen management, Espada was probably more likely to get those right but we will have to wait and see.

Unless guys get hired away idk why they just wouldn’t keep the coaching staff as is. They seem to like Loretta enough that I don’t think they’d fire him as bench coach if he wants to stay.

Didn't he interview for manager? Guys who try and get the bigger job rarely* stay at the lesser role when another candidate wins.

*Not sure if true, just an assumption.

Oh god

This reminds me of when they had the candidates do mock postgame press conferences. I think that was the time Sveum was hired

He did and so did Venable (who also interviewed for the Giants job). Loretta was a coach or in the FO San Diego with Jed and played for Theo/Jed in Boston, I think they clearly like him. Maybe it’s awkward but he’s not getting a head coaching job this offseason so it’s basically stay as bench coach or go try and find some lateral or lower job. I don’t think it’s uncommon to bring coaches back who are on the staff and interviewed for the main job and didn’t get it. I’d assume part of his interview was discussing the scenario of him coming back if he wasn’t hired as the HC.

Edit: Well Loretta is interviewing or has interviewed for the Padres job. Anyways I think bench coach and maybe 1B coach (which who cares) will be the only two spots they potentially change out.

Is Theo broken?

Then he demanded a bunt competition, and they eventually found him crumpled in a corner muttering "way of the future" over and over and over again.

Is Theo broken?

I like to imagine him like he's a king being fed grapes by Jed Hoyer and he's just like "This bores me, bring me the jester" and then David Ross walks in and he's like "Perform for meeeee, Jester... Your finest inspirational speech." And he does and he's like "Mmmmmm... Yes, very good jester, I shall keep you around indubitably"

And now he's our manager.

Also I didn't get much sleep last night so I'm a little delirious right now

I really liked the idea of plucking espada from the Astros. Not a big fan of hiring a manager with no experience in an official coaching role. He’ll probably be fine, assuming we decide to provide him with a functioning bullpen and he utilizes it well. But damn, i could be wrong but I feel like we went with the feel-good choice over the smart choice.
