Hooray for Lee. If he wears a Cards hat on his plaque, he's dead to me.

Has to be a good sign that the Hall used this picture in announcing his election

I’m all for a bigger HOF and making it more of a mueseum of the game instead of letting the voters using arbitrary measurements of worthiness so I like this and hopefully it opens up the flood gates for more guys getting in.

Even with this HOF that you suggest, Harold Baines should not be in it. Can you remember one memorable moment in his career? If you let Harold Baines in you have to consider people like Tim Wallach, Paul O’Neill, Kent Hrbek, Ray Lankford

Until Big Frank came around, Baines was possibly the best player (career) in White Sox history.

But that's more because the Sox sucked than he was all that good. He doesn't deserve to be close to the Hall unless he buys a ticket.

Agree. He shouldn’t be in but hopefully this is a sign that the backlogged guys who deserve to get in start getting in.

The hall is a joke ...

relievers don't belong in the hall ... none ... not even mariano rivera.

Baines may have been a nice player for a time ... but no way for HOF.

But I guess once they let that scrub Morris in it just opened the flood gates.

Pie Traynor is the only position player in the HOF with a lower WAR (36.3) than Baines (38.7).

Some notable differences between the two though:

Traynor: 1941 games, 6 Top 10 MVP finishes

Baines: 2830 games, 2 Top 10 MVP finishes

Your Lowest 10 WAR's of players voted into the HOF by the BBWAA:

- Pie Traynor: 36.3

- Harold Baines: 38.7

- Rabbit Maranville: 42.9 (your previous winner for the most widely regarded BBWAA fail)

- Lou Brock: 45.3 (was all time steals leader when voted in)

- Kirby Puckett: 51.1 (injury discount; only played in 1783 games)

- Mickey Cochrane: 52.1 (injury discount; only played in 1482 games; considered to be the best catcher ever at the time of his retirement)

- Gabby Hartnett: 53.4

- George Sisler: 54.0

- Tony Perez: 54.0

- Willie Keeler: 54.1

Wasn’t Baines a Veterans’ Committee selection?

Regardless, the Hall loves its counting stats and among eligible players, only Bonds, Palmeiro, and Vizquel have more hits than Baines. Bonds and Palmeiro are excluded because of steroids. Vizquel got nearly 40% of the vote in his first year of eligibility, and between his 2800 hits and 11 Gold Gloves, one would have to believe he’ll eventually get in, too.

Not saying I think Baines should be in. Just saying I see the (flawed) logic behind it.

Oh horsefeathers. I didn't realize he was Vets Committee.... I guess all that research was for naught.

Although I guess no one knows or gives a crap about the Vets Committee guys who have WAR's around Baines' (it's mostly those mediocre dudes from the 30's or players from the 19th century), so my list does have some relevance as a basis for comparison at least.
