Hot take incoming..... I’d rather have pissed off Jake on that 1+1 Fowler 2016 contract to prove the haters wrong than Darvish on a 4-6 year deal pitching for a team and city he doesn’t really want to be on/in and not being fully engaged here.
I've been wondering this too. I think Jake might be on fire next year. But no way he signs a one year deal. Hes going to get paid by someone and we've all seen what happens when Jake finally gets vindication (he goes from ridiculous to pretty good)

Huh?

Contact Year Jake was...fine. This does not seem like a sound theory.
That's kind of my point. He was still a good pitcher he just set the bar so high in late 2014 and 2015 that anything is a let down. If we don't get darvish, id rather have Jake starting, especially come October, than Monty

My point being he seems to be at his best when he feels disrespected. He takes it to a new level. Once he feels he's respected he seems to slack

This does not add up.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said during an appearance on SiriusXM that the team is not likely to sign Yu Darvish or one of the other top free agent pitchers.

Speaking on MLB Network Radio, Daniels said, "We've maintained contact with Darvish but I think it is unlikely we'll bring in one of the upper end pitchers." This would seemingly eliminate Jake Arrieta and perhaps Alex Cobb as well. The team is believed to have some wiggle room in their budget but apparently not enough to add an ace to their pitching staff.

I don’t think Arrieta spent the first half of *a contract year* sitting 91 mph because he wasn’t motivated. Or that he couldn’t command a pitch to save his life in the second half of 2016 because he wasn’t focused.

His mechanics are incredibly complicated and the slightest issue in repeating them can (literally) throw everything off. Plus — unless it was simply his mechanics — I think he wasn’t 100% in the first half last year judging by the velocity and sharpness jump later in the year.

I have no clue (nor do I think anyone does) but hypothetically IF the Cubs and Twins are only two willing/able to go big figures for a starter between Darvish/Cobb/Arrieta and there is one of those that isn't willing to back down then i can totally see jake holding out into the season when teams may get desperate (either with their record or with injuries). quite possibly into the mid-season, even. who was the last to hold out into mid-season/ASB? clemens? or am i misremembering someone else (see what i did there)?

I just see jake as someone stubborn enough to do that imo. and, honestly, it may not be the worst idea if the market isn't there at all right now. he's a crazy fitness guy so he would presumably still be in great shape and he would be resting his arm for a run after the ASB. though, i suppose it's much less likely a multi-year would be offered mid-season. still, if he was really well rested and went all out in that second half he could test the waters next year if he were god-mode jake for a half season. i don't know, i'm just rambling and thinking out loud at this point.

Other than the Twins and Cubs, who is going to sign a high price starter?

Phillies and Mariners?

The Phillies wouldn't shock me but they'd probably prefer to wait until next offseason. Still, this could be their Lester kind of move and it wouldn't be crazy.

The Mariners we haven't heard much about which is a little surprising. Same with the Angels. They got Ohtani, but there's very little certainty anywhere in that rotation and for a team that has playoff hopes.

And then there's the Dodgers potentially clearing a lot of money, but that likely takes selling a good prospect or two because Matt Kemp is worthless. On the surface, Andrew Friedman making all these moves -- and giving up good young talent -- just to sign a 31-year-old pitcher for $100 million+ seems unlikely.

Does it matter? He’s not signing with any team.

I'm just saying I think Jake thrives on people not believing in him. I think he gains an edge and a focus. He does have extremely complex mechanics and needs razor focus, it seems he's a guy who is at his best when he has something to prove. His struggles started after saying he wouldn't take a home discount and that he expected to get paid, it send like that's when things started slipping. That and the fact he threw his ass off for 2 and a half seasons. It seems like he got distracted by what he had done. When he lost his control and his touch and people started whispering that maybe he had lost it, he turned it back on. I think he comes out on fire this year. I'm not speaking bad on the guy, but some times guys look like they peak when they feel they need something to prove. I love Jake. Without him we don't have 2016, but he's fierce and he's proud, I think the perception of haters helps him.
