i'm just saying we probably shouldn't start a conversation about the validity of a domestic abuse accusation in regards to how it affects baseball decisions

fair enough. i don't disagree.

Sean Sears working up the masses saying the Rays and Cubs are getting serious about Archer.

That’s the guy UMFan loves to hate follow, right?

I refuse to follow him but sports mockery follows me and retweets his horsefeathers into my timeline.

please get this horsefeathering guy out of our division

I mean he's a nuisance to the Cubs but they have like a .700 win percentage over the Reds the last few years, I don't mind him staying on a garbage team.

Sounds like it's likely Grichuck could be out of St. Louis too, with those 2 out of the division our projected win total should go up by about 5 wins.

If we are going to trade a MIF I sincerely hope its the one who was accused of beating up the mother of one of his dozen children, but thats just me.

edit: Id actually like to trade him regardless. Sell him while value is still somewhat high, cause im not so sure he's ever going to come close to the barry larkin clone we were told

I posted a while ago that I thought Russell should be the 2nd name on the list of tradeable assets (behind Schwarber) simply because we have in-house replacements for both of them without missing a beat. Schwarber obviously belongs in the A.L., while Russell would certainly be a centerpiece in a major deal. Baez played flawlessly while sliding back to SS when Russell was out for an extended period and the Cubs went on a roll. Also the Cubs won 103 games during the season while Scwarber was injured. I'm not saying they aren't valuable or have a high potential, it's just that they can be easily replaced while bringing back a TOR starter.

I think a lot of people, not just on here but Cubs fans in general, don't get or understand how much better of a defensive shortstop Russell is than Baez on top of having superior offensive abilities/projection.

Yes, and Dexter Fowler was a 4+ WAR player that season, and is gone. You can't just say they won a lot without him to claim he is easily replaced.

Archer is really good but I wouldn’t want to pay the price for him I think (unless he somehow only costs like Happ and Monty from the major league roster, which I doubt..... I'm guessing we are talking two of the Baez/Happ/Schwarber/Almora/Russell group and I wouldn't include 2 of those guys or Russell at all in any shape of the trade and I get asking for any 2 of those guys may be fair but I just don't like the residual affect on the roster/position player depth).

He’s had some injury/velo dip concerns in his career, he can only go through a lineup twice (which I get with most SP that’s all you can really project but you’re paying a acquisition cost for him to be more than that) and he really only has 2 pitchers (FB/Slider) and I worry what happens if the slider loses some bite and/or his velo dips a bit in the FB.

Why do people hate having elite defense up the middle? Trading Russell is a defensive downgrade at SS and whoever replaces Baez at 2B is a downgrade there as well. You don't sign Chatwood and then weaken the infield defense like that.

Happ doesn't even have a starting job. We don't need an in house replacement for him.

I'll accept Russell's defensive capabilities, but I disagree with the offensive abilities/projection. The bottom line is that making a deal for a young, controlled starter is going to involve one of the young ML players on the roster and all of them have the potential to be top notch players. My point is that Russell's name should be among the others as a tradeable asset.

Making a deal for a young, controlled starter isn't a thing that we actually need to do.

However, in 1267 career PA, Baez has a wRC+ of 88. In 1506 career PA, Russell has a wRC+ of 90. Baez has been shielded heavily from tough matchups, and Russell hasn't (and obviously neither has set the world on fire).

Happ didn't have a starting job last year because Maddon kept waiting for Schwarber, Zobrist, and Heyward to regain their offensive capabilities.
