Piscotty to the A's is complete. Cards get back the two minor leaguers that were rumored. Yairo Munoz (22) and Batman villian Max Schreck (68).

I saw something yesterday on MLBN and meant to post it. They were saying the D’backs really want Martinez back but need to move either Greinke and Drury or Corbin and Pollock to make it happen. That seems really, really dumb and at best is just shifting value and making them no better and potentially even worse.

I guess that depends on the return they'd get for Grienke or Pollock.

For some reason and I have no idea why they made it seem to be an either/or but it was Greink and Drury (not necessarily same deal but both gone) or Corbin and Pollock combo (again not same deal but both gone). It didn’t sound like Greink and Pollock would both be gone. It’s just nonsense and likely not true but was a weird segment and supposed rumor. Also idk how much Greink gets back with his salary and he’s presumably a mostly salary dump to get Martinez in.

I saw someone speculate that the D-Backs signing Martinez to $25M AAV would necessitate renegotiating with Goldschmidt, whose contract is super team-friendly right now. They don't want to add Martinez's salary AND bump up Goldschmidt's

That speculation is dumb for a lot of reasons.

That's dumb.

Maybe so, as it was a dumb talking-head on MLBN saying it

What an awfully run organization, no wonder teams don’t like dealing with them. Just trade him to Yankees if that’s your fear, you aren’t competing this year and weaken their system.

I mean, this is the same org that doesn't bid on posted players, because they don't agree with the process and also the org that doesn't like selling off at mid season, because that's not the team fans bought tickets to see....

They waited a year too long to deal off Machado anyway. But, it doesn't really matter. They're not going to go full rebuild. They'll sit in 70-80 win territory for as long as Angelos owns them.

I wouldn't say they waited a year too long. I'd say they waited a few months too long. To ask them to trade Machado last winter ... after a 89 win season, a wildcard loss that might've been prevented had Buck gone to Zach Britton ... that's just unrealistic. They were still on the "high" of this window. At the time, the Yankees were still rebuilding, the Rays weren't ... pushing forward. On paper, they had Buck, they had a veteran pen, a good offense. They had Gausman, some signs from Bundy, and Tillman being a passable veteran starter, plus Miley putting some strong peripherals up. If anything, the argument should be that they should've been more aggressive last winter, knowing that this core was coming to a conclusion soon, one way or another, and while it's understandable about holding back on long term deals with SP, if you wanted to give this window one last shot, you needed to go all out. They didn't. Now, they should've considered it at the deadline, I'll grant you that. That said, Machado got off to a slow start (leaving aside the fact that they held some foolish hopes of a 2nd half push that fell apart eventually).

At the end of the day, based on how things fell, I think it's fair to say this winter was when they should've dealt Machado. Just don't limit your options when your options are already limited. Grant the window, be open to the Yankees. To be fair, a lot of this may be on Angelos, so Duquette may have some hands tied.

Britton/Brach? They should've done that earlier. Buck is great with pen arms and spacing their usage out so they are fresh. If you want to say keep Britton for and hope for a better return, at least move Brach and get something quality mid-season.

Angelos is that organization's biggest problem. That guy is the epitome of a meddling owner.

This is how stupid GM's and stupid ex-players and ex-executives think. The MLBN coverage was painful to watch this year

their coverage has been, for the most part, painful to watch since the very beginning

I wonder how Rizzo feels about that Jason Heyward contract.

I've always wonderered how he's felt about his deal turning out super-team friendly, but if there's any bitterness he seems to be hiding it well. But might also be why he seems unable to say no sponsoring things.

(Not that there's anything wrong with that, and I know he gave Lurie $3.5 million just this year too)

I've always had the impression Rizzo has a bit of a different outlook on those things because of his cancer scare, which is also reflected in his philanthropy and why he took that deal in the first place.

same. he seems quite gruntled to me
