Plus, I'm not positive playing the Brewers is any harder than playing the Pirates at this point. The Brewers are about to be swept by the Reds and go to 22-27 in the 2nd half. And their offense is putrid.

We're lined up to face their top 3 this weekend, which certainly makes it more difficult. But it's not like the Cards are that much better than the Pirates. They don't have a cake walk. They could lose series to any of these teams, including the Reds, as the Brewers are seeing right now.

Baseball is a crazy spot. One week you are going 5-2 against the Dodgers and Nationals, the next you are in the process of being swept by the Reds.

Apparently these days, going 2-1 against the Dodgers is disappointing.

Andy Green, not to be outdone by Bryan Price leaves Lamet in after dominating for 6 innings but needing 100 pitches. Single, homer to start the inning and the deadbirds are up 2-1

and they are going to have think about being swept by the reds for 2 whole days instead of 1.5.

Their broadcasters were bitching about it today saying "maybe the Cubs should've planned for this" without acknowledging it was only possible because a Sunday night game was moved to the daytime

imagine blowing a 7 game lead to the cardinals in september

Imagine winning the division by 8 games.

We've gone on a losing stretch and Cards have gone on a winning stretch and we're still up 4. Last time this happened they tied the division and then dropped all the way to 7 back.

Our losing stretch involved an injury to a starter than things going haywire and a reliever blowing a late 1 run lead. I don't really see the need to sound the alarms.

Definitely not time to sound the alarms. I already said it earlier in this thread, but the Cardinals being back in the race definitely sucks -- mainly because they are the Cardinals and they deserve nothing but misery.

But we're still 4 up. We haven't blown anything yet. That's nice that they've made up a few games and once again became our toughest competition. But we've been between 2 and 4.5 games up every day since August 19. Our outlook really hasn't changed at all. We spent 1 day 4.5 up over this past weekend. But this 4 game lead is the largest we've had all year outside of that day.

The teams behind us have changed order -- and one has dropped off the radar completely -- but we've just been cruising along with a steady cushion for a month-and-a-half now (outside of that one time you mention that they tied us).

The recent losses stink because we couldn't expand that lead. And the Cardinals hopes have been revived. But we're still 4 up with not much time left. I'll start to worry if they get within 2 of us, I guess.

The Cardinals and their +66 RD are definitely more formidable than the Brewers but making up 4 games with 23 left is difficult unless the Cubs totally collapse. If the Cubs play 12-11 baseball to finish the year, the Cardinals would have to go 17-6 to pass us. And even then the Rockies, with the worst record in the NL since the break, would have to go 15-8 to take any Cubs baseball after game 162 out of the mix.

Yes, the only way anyone but the Cubs win the division is if the Cubs go like 8-15 to end the year(and maybe not even then!), with an outside chance that one of the Cardinals/Brewers pass them by winning 5 or 6 of 7 head to head even if the Cubs go .500ish the rest of the way.

In other words, winning this weekend's series functionally eliminates the Brewers. Do that, and winning next weekend's series will functionally eliminate the Cardinals.

remember earlier in the season when the Cardinals won like 8 in a row then went on to being the Cardinals again? it's coming.

side note: I have a friend who's a Cards fan and last year he decided he was going to stop shaving until they won 10 in a row. he looks ridiculous now

I initially read the "he" as "she." Yeah, I bet she looks ridiculous now.

1. It's insane to me that the Nationals are going to clinch before the Dodgers

2. Does anybody else not like this Dodgers struggle? I'd prefer they won 120 and then went cold in October, I just get a bad feeling of them limping into October and everybody laughing at them and then they flip it back on in October

I think you're alone on #2. horsefeathers them. Yes, I am bitter. But I am relishing every minute of this after all the stupid articles about them being the best team ever. I hope they win 102 games, have a lower RD than the 2016 Cubs and then lose in the NLDS.
