"Readiness, recuperation, conditioning. You see, after the game, a lot of guys like to ice up their arms. Still other fellas think that heat is the way to go. But I discovered the secret, Henry. Hot ice. That's right, hot ice! I heat up the ice cubes! It's the best of both worlds!"

Bumgarner vs. Jake Arrieta is a marquee matchup of very confident, successful pitchers. I asked Lester if AT&T Park is big enough to handle that much “machismo” on the mound.

“Ooh, that’s a lot of machismo,” Lester said. “That’ s lot of ‘Dig me’ right there.”

In a positive way, of course.

“It’s good though,” Lester said. “That’s a good matchup. I love it. That’s what baseball needs. You need matchups like this.”

(That’s when his lockermate John Lackey took a break from brushing his cowboy hat and said, “You need to be quiet.” Lester responded, “I don’t like being quiet, John.”)

“You need games like this,” Lester continued. “That’s what draws people, that’s what fills stadiums, you know?”

“I think he’s an alpha male,” Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer told me. “I thought it was awesome last year with that little Twitter thing with Pittsburgh. Not because you love that stuff but it just shows you that he’s not going to back down from the moment. He wanted the moment and ultimately, you want guys that want the big stage. I thought that was the beauty of Curt Schilling in Boston. There’s nothing better than shutting up 55,000 people from New York. You want a guy who wants to be out there trying to quiet a crowd. Jake kind of owned that [in the wild card game]. That’s an ace attitude. That’s a No. 1 starter attitude.”

But Arrieta is no longer the No. 1 starter. That’s Lester. Kyle Hendricks is the out-of-nowhere Cy Young candidate. Arrieta is trying to recapture his reputation as the baddest pitcher on the planet. So whom better to challenge than Bumgarner?

Lester is right, Arrieta and Bumgarner in a possible elimination game is exactly what baseball needs. And the Cubs need Arrieta to pitch like it’s Sept. 2015 again, when he’s trying to prove to everyone he’s the best pitcher in the game.

It's really amazing how that show basically is as bad now as it was amazing then. How TF does that happen?

Every promo I see on Fox for a new episode makes me cringe at its badness.

The key to this game still is that fact that the Giants lineup sucks balls. I don't care how good Bumgarner is but if you can't score you can't win. Edited by TMan92

Here and there, you get a good episode, although the La-Z-Rider couch gag intro was terrific and I wish that were the actual show now.

Laughed entirely too hard at this.

Same. I thought I included that. Might've dropped it when I tried trimming my quotes (EDIT - Nevermind, I'm blind).

Also, this man is obviously going to take care of business for us.

If I ever thought I possessed even an ounce of manliness, I have realized my mistake and I apologize to Mr. Arrieta.

Almora vs LHP: .548 SLG, .827 OPS

Heyward vs LHP: .286 SLG, .586 OPS

Limited sample size and MadBum isn't your typical lefty, but put me in the camp who would like to see Almora tonight. He'll be fine in the field.

I know I'm in the vast minority, but I would still prefer to see Soler in LF and Zobrist or Bryant in RF. With Russell not contributing much lately, I would prefer to have Soler's bat in the lineup behind Zobrist. Either way, we will find out soon enough.

Almora is extremely bipolar when it comes to L/R splits in the minors

2016 (minors)

OPS v R: .784 (233 AB)

OPS v L: .598 (87 AB)

2015

OPS v R: .681 (315 AB)

OPS v L: .876 (90 AB)

2014 (AA)

OPS v R: .638 (118 AB)

OPS v L: .435 (23 AB)

2014 (A+)

OPS v R: .689 (254 AB)

OPS v L: .764 (113 AB)

Not sure if we can tell anything by those splits

It would take Soler 15 minutes to get to a fly ball down the line given the size of that OF. I'd much rather have someone with even below average mobility out there.

Apparently Cubs were getting Almora, Soler, and Willy a lot of extra work in the OF today. I think one of them starts for Heyward, I would prefer it to be Almora.

It is being reported that Miggy will be behind the dish.

Give me Soler and his multitude of dongs.

And someone remind me why our left handed catcher is starting against Bumgarner?

Is the NL going to allow Soler to use a Segway to patrol the OF?

It was explained to him today that he has to run in the outfield. He is used to trotting around the bases and thought that trotting was the only acceptable gait in MLB. All is well now.
