I saw a stat on Twitter that Heywards defense has saved the Cubs 13 runs this year.

And his offense has cost them 22 runs

I'm still not on the bench him bandwagon but I'm actually not dismissing of starting someone like Almora in the playoffs which insane

I really, really, really hope beyond hope he has a good year somehow after year 3 and he opts the horsefeathers out. He flat out sucks.

Javy's slide has somewhat complicated things, but I still think against a lefty (maybe you match Lester against him) you put Baez at third and Bryant out with Soler and Fowler. If there's no sign of hope in the next couple weeks, I wonder if they'd consider Almora or putting LaStella at third and Bryant out in right against a righty. Obviously Zobrist can play out there too, but I'd be wary of a Soler/Fowler/Zobrist outfield.

Vs a LH starting pitcher in the playoffs I'd be fine going with Javy at 2B/3B and Zobrist/Bryant in the OF with Soler and Fowler the other OF. Other than that I think he should still be starting every playoff game.

Wait, is the thought here that he will suck until after year 3 where hopefully he hits again? That's interesting, I wonder if that'll actually happen.

Obviously, that's doom bonering a worst case scenario, but it is a bit disconcerting when someone is THIS bad for this long with basically no signs of improvement outside of a couple weak BABIP-fluke stretches.

But then again, it is baseball, and plenty of guys inexplicably just have bad years.

This thread is bad. Too many good things about this team to enjoy. I choose to ignore this.

I think one of the greatest things is that the biggest offseason acquisition, by far, fell completely on his face, didn't come close to living up to expectations or providing any value.

And the team is still better than last year and historically good.

AND Schwarber died AND Soler basically contributed nothing AND the pitching got older and they're still this good. It's really pretty damn impressive.

Arbitrary end points alert:

Since July 10 (50 games): .183/.221/.256/.477

That's almost a third of a season hitting like that

And remember that brief bump after he sat out the colorado series. Here are his numbers since that series including the bump:

.213/.244/.293/.537

I am concerned that Heywards 'thing' (an extreme groundball hitter that has a really long fluky swing) has been figured out and is unfixable

I don't think thats likely, but it is a small concern

I was more upset with Castro's hitting last year than Heyward this season because his adjustment was much easier in that he just needed to stop pulling everything. Heyward, on the other hand, literally doesn't know how to swing a bat. Like its frustrating, but I feel bad for the guy.

I went a long period thinking the contract would still end up being fine. But there's zero signs of life, and he'll need to completely overhaul his swing this winter. Anytime changes that big have to be made, Im not so sure the default assumption should be that he'll be fine. I now have big concerns over what I thought was the safest $180 million FA contract ever.

I know right? All he had to was be like a 2 WAR offensive player and the contract looks good. Heck even if he could hit like .250/.325/.375, he has a positive value to our team.

If we are completely overhauling his swing, who knows what type of hitter he ends up as. He could end up being a .700 OPS K machine, he could end up sacrificing almost all his power for getting better contact and end up a singles hitter. Or he could simply end up being the same broken hitter he is now.

eh, i just think that heyward isn't the swing doctor like some of these guys (rizzo, bryant, etc.) and the cubs wrecked him with the adjustments in an attempt to get him to get the ball in the air more. at this point i've convinced myself he's more likely to have his best year at the plate vs. repeat this performance at some point over the next two seasons

He's like two different hitters in one body. His top half wants to go middle-away and his bottom half wants to pull the ball.
