Here's a thought:

-After Lackey pitches tonight, drop him for a spare RH bat, Candelerio or Scissors being the only options.

-If we reach the WS, drop the least effective bench bat for Smith or Cahill. Then when Lackey's spot comes up, replace the least effective reliever with Hammel.

Yeah seriously and while we're at it, why are Lester, Arrieta and Hendricks on the roster in games they don't pitch? Are they really going to come on in relief? This is just piss poor lazy roster management by Theo/Joe. No wonder we're losing!

Do u even baseball, bro?

Even if you could just swap whover out with phantom injuries, and you didn't have to replace them from the same position(Pitcher or Position Player)

Why would anyone ever want to voluntarily start Jason Hammel in the World Series.

Why doesn't Theo just do a *wink wink* trade with the Angels for Mike Trout where we will return him after the playoffs? Just pretend Coghlan is hurt and replace him on the roster. Get it done Theo.

Because odds are, he's never read a single post on this board. Ever.

Brett and Sahadev Sharma wondering if Schwarber can play in the WS because he's playing in the AFL. They don't know roster rules?

Or does he qualify for B?

(1) Major League Roster Players. To be eligible to play for a Major League Club in a Wild Card Game, Division Series, League Championship Series, or the World Series, a player must

(A) have been on a Major League Active, Disabled, Bereavement / Family Medical Emergency, Paternity, Suspended or Military List of such Major League Club as of Midnight Eastern Time on August 31, or on such date be under control, but on optional assignment, or on assignment from another Major League organization and not yet reported; and

(B) have remained reserved to such Major League Club (at the Major or Minor League levels) through the beginning of the applicable post-season series, unless the player is replacing an injured player pursuant to Rule 40(a)(3).

Was he not on the disabled list?

Being assigned to the AFL for rehab doesn't take Schwarber off the Cubs' Reserve List

They DFA'd Giovanni Soto and moved Schwarbs to the 40 man today.

He qualifies for A. He's been on the DL all season.

Given the update on Schwarber, and the rumors now swirling, I think it is a good bet he'll be on the World Series roster. (Saying that just will never get old... World Series roster... World Series roster...) So, how does the roster shake out if he does? Zastryzny didn't pitch and he was there because of the Dodgers left-handedness. I think you see the same roster as for the NLCS, just with Schwarber replacing Zastryzny. But with the Cleveland pitching staff being so right-handed (only lefties are Miller and Merritt), I also think you could also see La Stella replacing Almora.

Pitchers -- 11:

Lester (Games 1 and 5)

Arrieta (Games 2 and 6)

Hendricks (Games 3 and 7)

Lackey (Game 4)

Wood (L)

Montgomery (L)

Chapman (L)

Rondon ®

Strop ®

Edwards ®

Grimm ®

Position -- 14:

Baez ® -- 2B/3B/SS

Bryant ® -- 3B/OF

Rizzo (L) -- 1B

Russell ® -- SS

Zobrist (S) -- OF/2B

Fowler (S) -- OF

Heyward (L) -- OF

Soler ® -- OF

Coghlan (L) -- OF

Contreras ® -- C/LF

Ross ® - C

Montero (L) - C

Schwarber (L) -- DH

Almora ®/La Stella (L)

I think if you aren't going to start Heyward, I'd put Szczur on the roster. Not over Heyward, but over Almora. Maddon didn't really use many defense only changes in the 2 rounds so far. Szczur gives you a better bat and the defense in the corners is probably a marginal difference (though, huge advantage for Almora in CF).

IF- Rizzo, Baez, Bryant, Russell

OF- Fowler, Heyward, Szczur, Coghlan

OF/IF- Zobrist

DH- Schwarber

Pitching would be the same as now minus Zastryzny.

I can't find anything online that discourages it besides "Commissioner's Discretion", but why wouldn't every single team fake an injury for their 4th starter in the World Series and replace them with another normal pen arm? In earlier rounds, the player is ineligible for the next round, but there is no such rule/punishment for the World Series.

It does say that a pitcher must be replaced by a pitcher, but I guess the possibility that you need the 4th guy to pitch long relief or something? What I'm saying is that if they don't sweep, they should fake a Lackey injury and activate another reliever.

why not just use Lackey as a reliever?

That's the option, but how many times has he pitched in relief? Would he be better than Cahill/Rob Z/whoever else? I mean, the upgrade of those guys over Lackey in some sort of mythical 14 inning game 7 is probably negligible and not worth risking punishment from MLB, but it could be worth it in some instance.
