If Maddon wasn't going to use LaStella in a 13-inning game in which the team got 1 hit in 27 ABs and trotted Montgomery out there for 5 innings of relief, Cahill or Hammel should have been on this roster.

There weren't exactly a lot of pinch hit opportunities by the time Montomery took the mound, and Edwards was the last available reliever.

But I do think that our bench features enough pop that Joe should consider replacing LaStella or Coghlan with a fresh arm. Though I'd go with Joe Smith, who was absolutely phenomenal after returning from the DL.

Curious choice to put him on the roster. He has to be scared horsefeathers, with Great Whites being that close in proximity.

I figured he wasn't available because he was frolicking with his brethren in the cove.

We got through 12 innings despite using 5 of our relievers(including one who could be a long-man)for a combined 2 innings. We don't need an 8th reliever.

I'm open to the argument that taking Hammel as a long reliever frees up Montgomery to be used to slay lefties, which is a feature for all the NL teams. I'm also perfectly comfortable with all our RHRP facing lefties too, but there's value in putting the hitter at his platoon disadvantage.

I wouldn't be shocked if Hammel was added due to Hendricks getting beat up, Arrieta effectively being a 6 inning guy, Lackey disappointing and the fact it is a 7 game series. You don't need as many arms in a 5 game. I'd like to keep the extra bat though. Bats are more fun.

I mentioned it in the game thread last night, I think, but if it is the Dodgers we face I wouldn't be surprised to see Zastrynzy on the roster replacing Grimm. I hope the position players stay the same, I guess we could have left LaStella in San Francisco with his brethren in the bay

So what's the rotation for the NLCS, in terms of having guys make starts on regular rest? Lester(1), Hendricks(2), Arrieta(3), Lackey(4), Lester(5), Hendricks(6), Arrieta(7)? Would all those starts be at least on 4 days rest?

The game 6 starter would have an extra day of rest, but the others would all be on the regular schedule.

I don't think Lackey's poor performance last night will have any bearing on Hammel's roster candidacy. Joe isn't going to let a one game sample size determine that. Besides, there are three days off so everyone will be fully rested by the time the NLCS begins.

If we're down 1-2 or 0-3, what's the chances Joe skips Lackey and goes back to Lester on three days rest? If we're up 2-1 or better, I think it's pretty safe he sticks to plan, but worse than that.... I gotta think there's at least a 50/50 chance he goes back to the main horses. If Hammel makes the NLCS roster, I wouldn't mind seeing a couple of piggy back games after the top three make their first round through the rotation in the series.

Lester has only started on 3 days rest twice in his career, most recently 5 years ago.

9/28/11: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 5/4 K/BB, 1 HR - Previous outing was 2.2 IP and 55 pitches

4/23/08: 5 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 1/2 K/BB, 2 HR - Previous outing was 6.1 IP and 106 pitches

Given the strength and depth of the bullpen, I would rather they start Lackey and aggressively pull him after one trip through the order than start Lester on 3 days rest.

If LAD wins, Montgomery,Wood and Zastryzny need to all be on the roster and ready to throw a ton of pitches in this series, Andrew Miller style. LAD is simply too dangerous against right handed pitching. If the Nationals win then I'm pretty much happy with the NLDS roster.

i wish people would just never suggest starting guys on short rest. it is not good. if the alternative isn't starting 2003 estes, it shouldn't even cross your mind. hell, even then, i'd rather do a bullpen game like we kinda did in game 4 nlds last year.

Yeah, especially if the idea is just to get to a guy quicker. You're still on the verge of elimination if you win. Save him for when he is fully rested. Try to steal that game and you still have your ace coming on normal rest later.

If he's only starting two games anyway, and you have to win four games anyway, then don't get desperate. Let it play out.

I wonder if Tommy is gonna stick around in the dugout or go back to Jersey and pout

I think we left him on a rock in San Fran.

I would assume the Cubs make him follow the team around in case an injury strikes and they have to change their roster.
