this is dumb and awful stuff

You should feel shame

Why? And bringing up an old post of mine, when I replied to someone calling me a fairy, which in this sites terms is equivalent to what I rhymed a word with? Get out of here

Freyr, I'm not going to come down too harshly on you because I was where you are now before doing a 180 on the whole thing. But just think about this -- they had an argument in a house full of their friends and family. In front of her brother Chapman put his hands on her neck and forced her against a wall. Could you imagine someone doing that to someone you loved? In front of their sibling? How little respect does he actually have for this woman, someone he is supposed to love and protect?

Now, even if he had done all of this with zero witnesses around, its still bad. Very, very bad. But he still did it knowing full well that her family and his were there watching/listening. Talk about a lack of self control, human decency.. both. Even if she instigated the fight and hit him first he is a hulking professional athlete and there were plenty of people there he could have asked to help intervene or calm her down. But nope, he put his hand around her throat and pushed her against a wall. With her daughter in the house. And then fired a shotgun 8 times in his house. And after all of that, he still shows very little remorse, if any at all. No, he didn't beat her to within an inch of her life, but she still probably felt that she was.

Completely agree with you. I don't believe he put his hands on her neck. That's all I'm saying. If I thought he did, I would be talking like 90% of everyone else.

And now that I know what I know about Freyr I realized I wasted my time by writing that out. Seriously, "rhymes with baggot"? Go back to your Trump rally.

I'm not voting for anyone to be honest, Hillary is just as bad.

A mod should suspend this poster for trying to start a political war in here now haha. Unreal.

it'd be easier to suspend you

boy either chapman is either dumber than i thought or he has no self-awareness. i thought he'd come out and at least show a little sympathy or understanding of the perception of him, but maybe he just doesn't care. it's pretty clear he doesn't have a lot of interest in being here or schmoozing up to anyone, he'll just collect his paychecks, try and get his ring and head back to NY.

he better get guys out.

Like chapman, I've already done my suspension

Do another

If you got a life, I would agree to a suspension for no reason lol. Instead of trying to rip on me, or the pitcher we just acquired who's going to save this team that you've spent years on a forum posting about, put your time into something productive.

This is a bit of a silver lining to Chapman's comments, I guess. Ole Hank White might not be much of an interpreter. This tweet summarizes his timeline if you want to click through and read in more detail:

How has Chapman done interviews in the past since he speaks little to no English, did he have an interpreter?

It seems kind of lazy of the organization to send Hank White out there if he's this bad of a translator and not have a professional in there. Especially knowing the nature of the questions and importance of the response that was coming

Not sure if this has been posted (I'm sure it has) but the hate for chapman is unreal. I've never seen anything like this in Chicago sports. It's pathetic, and it's mostly female reporters trying to bolster their name, or someone like Dan Bernstein trying to save face. This sucks.

Read the link. It's got direct quotes from the girlfriend, as well as accounts from the Police. I am in no way, shape or form defending someone who committed DV, I truly don't think Chapman touched her. It looks like he and her got into it because she had his phone in her hand. Did he grab her and take his phone?

This is a female who wa suspicious of her "Star Pitcher husband" cheating on her. She didn't leave her child alone in the house while Chapman went and let out his anger in the garage. The girlfriends brother broke up whatever occurred, and there were other people there.

You think her brother would let somebody get away with someone hitting/choking/pushing/anything towards his sister? I mean I sure as hell wouldn't.

People need to read up on this instead of trying to push their own agendas.

Choking doesn't have to leave marks or even redness. I took Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for about a year, and I don't recall seeing any indications on choke-hold days though I admit I wasn't looking for them (and we were using arms, not hands). Not trying to criticize you though - your point, that we should be careful about snap judgements, I agree with completely.

I do have to disagree that a feeling of unease isn't warranted though. In his favor, that one incident appears to be the only history of DV. On the other hand, we know for certain is that he fired a gun off after some sort of fight (physical or not) with his girlfriend. That's not ok. Whether intended or not a threat is implicit in that action, and the fact that his mind apparently went to guns (and not even a gun range) right after a fight with his gf is frankly flat-out frightening.

The reaction I'd like to see from him now is 'I did this, I hate that I lost control like that, and I'm doing everything I can to become a better person, the sort of person that can handle this in a mature way.' Maybe even "I'd rather leave my mistakes in the past." Instead, he's getting defensive, proclaiming that 'nothing happened, so why should I care' (see here). We had ONE brief instance of an appropriate-ish reaction at the start of the suspension (here), but obviously he dropped the good parts of that on coming back, as in the WaPo article. He appears to have no understanding as to why people see this incident as problematic.

I'll feel better about this as time passes IF nothing else happens, but ... I really, really wish I could be confident that he's learned anything from this.

The Cubs (all teams in MLB) are supposed to have an interpreter on staff. I'm guessing Hank White is the Cubs actual interpreter.

the cubs don't have a real interpreter around to do chapman's first media but they successfully grilled this dude two days ago to make sure he was nice and wouldn't prey on women anymore

So what is Hank White worse at, being a catcher or being an interpreter? I'll go with interpreter since it affects how someone else is perceived.

Related note, I went to look up his career stats and started to type in "Hank White" into B-R before I remembered that wasn't actually his name.

The court of public opinion is guilty until proven innocent and there is never going to be anything he can do to satisfy it, which is inherently unfair to Chapman.

It's also extremely unfair to his girlfriend, as there's no fair restitution for what he did to her, and she's still with him so it's not over yet. She's (and he) the only one that truly knows what happened, and hopefully the violence towards her is over.

how so?

the court of public opinion doesn't render a verdict or assume guilt immediately or arbitrarily. It takes evidence that may or may not hold up in court, but the existence of which we can't in fact pretend doesn't exist.

Pooooooooooor Chapman!!! Won't anyone think of the man that just served a domestic violence suspension and at a minimum fired a gun eight times in his garage scaring his girlfriend into hiding in the bushes?! And, according to her initial story, choked her and pushed her against a wall? So mistreated!
