This trade, and therefor this thread, is really good for finding out who has abhorrent views regarding domestic violence. Maybe that was Theo's plan?

I can totally understand the cognitive dissonance that we will mostly all fall into that will allow us to still generally enjoy the season, while feeling pretty bad about Chapman has a human. What I cannot understand is that it seems like a many people don't even struggle a bit with how to feel about the move. Oh wait, I can totally understand it because we see it all the time. But it sure perplexes me that so many people think that way.

I just wish that Theo didn't make this move. And more than that, I wish our society had an answer for how to deal with people who treat their "loved ones" terribly. And mostly, I wish people just didn't do it in the first place.

Freyr, did you struggle at all with how to feel about Chapman as a human and the fact that he is now an important player on a team that you root for?

No not at all, I'm throwing out another scenario in what could have went down, since I provided a link yesterday with details of what happened. He didn't choke her, that's clear enough. He also fired a gun in the garage after the girlfriend had ran off already. Stop making it out to be he was firing a gun at her. That's absolutely absurd

I didn't say he fired it at her.

It's more than a little [expletive] up you think firing off a gun during a domestic dispute is only really a problem if they're firing AT someone.

im not defending the gun part, I misread it as you saying he was using a gun to protect himself or fire at her. Either way, he should have thrown a baseball thru the wall instead of that gun. I'm guessing that was his way of letting out anger. I think all of us on here can put that much together, right?

It's a classic case of culture clash. You see where he comes from, shooting one's garage full of holes following a heated argument is the sincerest form of apology.

If you are feeling uncomfortable having him on the Cubs, this is a really great idea to help your conscience in rooting for him.

Or maybe do it for each strikeout since the Cubs like to FTC a lot (like tonight).

How about donate each time that the Cubs screw the closer, so that you're not rooting for Chapman at all.

In any case, it's a lot more fun to root for "screw the closer" with Chapman. I always felt a little bad for Rondon. I don't for Chapman.

There are way too many simple minded people who are amazed when I tell them Rondon has a better ERA and similar K/9 to Chapman after they tell me how much better it will now be to have Chapman closing. And instead of realizing that Rondon is awesome, they think I'm just diminishing Chapman.

edit: i just realized this probably wasn't relevant to the main point you were making here but oh well.

I'm too busy at work today to tear into this appropriately, but I'll just say that you need to read more about domestic violence, why victims don't report or retract their reports, and why they stay with abusers.

It's far more important than baseball.

Or his girlfriend is crazy and was reacting to possibly finding out he was texting another girl (seems childish I know). No one knows anything other than the people at the scene. It's day 3 of Chapman trade being done, move on with your lives and don't cheer him on when he's saving this team. And yea they do need saving, they really have played awful since June

you don't get to decide what people discuss here. you know what this topic is about. contribute positively or ignore it and gtfo.

Maybe we can split it into 2 seperate threads: "Cubs acquire Chapman from Yankees for Torres, McKinney, 2 others" and "Aroldis Chapman is a disgusting, disgraceful pig of man and so is anyone who cheers for him without taking a scalding hot shower immediately after and still doesn't hate themselves in the morning."

It was more commentary on the horse being beaten to death in this thread. Someone made a suggestion to have a Chapman: Good Baseball Player and a Chapman: Awful Human Being thread, which I thought was a good idea.

It's a terrible idea. That just makes it easier to ignore the things that make him a terrible human, and those things shouldn't be ignored.

Jesse Rogers seems to think we have no interest/intention to sign Chapman long term either during the year or in the offseason. Fwiw

I have a very hard time believing that the Cubs wouldn't at least consider an offer in the offseason.

An idea I haven't seen here yet is: Re-sign Chapman in the offseason and perhaps look to deal Rondon? Given that the high end reliever market has become valuable in acquiring a nice haul, could they utilize Rondon to help replenish what they lost in the Chapman deal? Additionally, the Cubs are completely playing with house money on Rondon, whose history of arm injuries (yes, he has been healthy obviously the last few years) is concerning for us having to decide on a rich contract for him in a couple years. An elite arm in the 'pen like him could bring back significant value. Also, could he be included as a piece for a young starter?

This is so meatbally, but when Chapman came in the 8th the thought didn't even cross my mind that we were going to lose, I knew it was over. I still love rondon, but when he closed I was always preparing myself for him to blow it

And I think it's ok to feel this way and still say that Rondon was very good as a closer.

Rondon's k/bb ratio is 49/5. Is that good? Did he break it?

I think the crazy thing is that it's not an incorrect thought. Rondon has been one of the best relievers in the game the last couple years, and Chapman blows save opps *half as often* as he does.

Aroldis' entrance music should be the old Vince McMahon entrance theme.

And Stone Cold should beat him with a bedpan.

Living outside St. Louis, I have really enjoyed having this conversation with multiple cards fan friends.

Me: I need you to help me with something.

Friend: yeah, what's up.

Me: the Cubs just traded for Arnold's chapman. He has a history of domestic violence, shooting a gun off in his garage, and just seems to be an awful person. As a Cubs fan, I don't have much experience rooting for awful, terrible people, but as a Cardinals fan, you've rooted for LaRussa, Darryl Kile, Molina and Oscar Tavares who killed his girlfriend driving drunk. How do you do it? How do you cheer for such awful, terrible people?

Friend: (silence)
