Baez is an All-Star starter.

It is amazing to me that he is getting a ton of grief on this when Bryce Harper is on the team. Do people even look at at statistics?

Is he? He’s 0.2 WAR behind Albies with 76 less plate appearances. And he can play SS and 3B. Hardly an outrageous decision by the fans.

Tied after today in fWAR. And I still think Javy isn't valued properly defensively because of his Javy Tags and other ridiculous plays like the Puig DP the other day.

Yeah, on the one hand I have faith in advanced metrics which seem to indicate that he is a sub-par fielder but damnit if my own eyes don’t show the exact opposite.

Conversations with Baez would involve him switching from English to Spanish twice in the same sentences and him calling whoever he's talking to the wrong name.

I mean, fans are gonna always be mad if their favorite player doesn't make the team, so I get that some extent. But most national media types that I saw last night seemed to think that this was the right choice. Didn't even give it too much conversation, honestly.

Yeah, I don't understand why he doesn't accrue more value on defense. He definitely passes the eye test and most baseball scouts/execs believe he's excellent defensively. I really think the gulf between Russell and Baez on defense is overstated and not that large.

I remember a year or two back, that Cameron or Sullivan had said that Javy's extra stuff(tags, slides) probably equaled about another .5 WAR.

Cubs slugger Kris Bryant is expected to be activated before Wednesday’s game against the Giants, and Javier Baez doesn’t envision any problems.

“I’ll bat wherever,” said Baez, who batted in the third spot while Bryant was recovering from left shoulder inflammation the past 2 ½ weeks. “I’ll bat 12th in the lineup if I have to.”

Odds that Baez genuinely thinks there is anywhere between 9 and 20 batters in a lineup given his face/name blindness? Pretty damn good.

he probably deserves a few runs that are credited to Contreras for CS (and possibly Schwarber's OF assists? do IF get any credit for relay throws there?)

Just watched the Tigers broadcast. They knew it was coming and showed the play from a few weeks ago against the Dodgers just before he did it again LOL

Nothing but incredulity at his fearlessness and slide.

haha yeah this was such a treat, Rod Allen spends the whole AB saying "i'd be careful about throwing over to first here" and waxes poetic about Javy's baserunning and the time he stole home on Matz, talking about nothing else but warning against a steal of home and then Baez promptly does just that and Allen goes silent for a brief moment as if he were throwing up his hands

I don’t think “Javy doesn’t know names” is a meme anymore. It’s just real life.

It started when he was in like AA and he was talking about how great his team's lineup was, and he knew himself and two other top-100 prospects. He went down the list saying "some guy" for everyone else.

Edit: Found it.

This was the thread where we were excited that Arismendy Alcantara was going to get a couple of days up for Darwin Barney's paternity leave but we were worried Renteria wouldn't play him. And IMB was right, that kind of stuff seems *hilarious* and not annoying in retrospect.

I really, really wanted Mendy to be a thing. But then Javy showed me what middle infield defense is supposed to look like.

I know the story but it turned into a meme where if for example players went into a slump Javy would forget their name and stuff. Now I’m convinced that the Beatles didnt do enough in their career for Javy to know who they are. I’m pretty sure Javy out of ignorance called his wife ‘honey’ or ‘you’ until she produced his child.

How much longer until Javy passes KB and Rizz in popularity in Chicago? Has it already happened?

Honestly I think it has. Next time you're at Wrigley listen to the crowd when they announce the lineups before the game.

My 11yo son's a huge Baez fanatic, to the point of getting a blonde mohawk and temporary MLB logo tattoos for the back of his neck during youth baseball season.

Of course, he was a huge Castro fan before that, so I don't know if he's the norm.

Not a big fan of those old baseball cliches (grit/toughness), but Baez was not feeling well last night so I understand what Schwarber means. I think Baez plays with a lot of nicks and bruises all the time and wonder how he does this stuff without missing significant time.

this was more of a hot take a week ago, but i think he's the rightful 1st half MVP

and it's somewhat crazy to consider especially in today's game when he has just single-digit unintentional BBs
