Rosenthal reporting Melancon to the Nats. Felipe Rivero and a prospect is the known return at the moment.

Hearn is the prospect. 5th round lefty that throws hard. Very reasonable trade, Theo's disruption doesn't appear to have worked.

Random thoughts:

Marlins trade was horrible. Now, more than ever, they need to hope Wei Yin Chen isn't seriously injured, as mediocre as he's been this year. They sent Naylor, Castillo and Capps (I guess Cosart is a factor) for Cashner and Rea (and Guerrero)? That essentially emptied their farm again.

Contrasting the Melancon trade with the Chapman and Cashner deals is interesting. On the surface, I get the reasonable trade aspect of it. Melancon should be an upgrade on Papelbon, and the Nats are pushing. Still, I really like this deal for the Pirates. They got a guy in Rivero who might be better than Melancon soon, if not now, and a big time arm in Hearn. I really don't think the move is going to dent their competitiveness this year, and it sets them up better long run. I question how much better the Nats pen is with Melancon as the closer vs. sliding Kelley to that role and restructuring the pen usage. Don't get me wrong ... it's better ... just not sure by how much. That said, yeah, it is reasonable.

Wonder who that 3rd piece is, must be a decent prospect, because I have a hard time seeing MIL biting on a d'Arnaud / Nimmo led package.

Some tweets this morning from Marc Topkin (Tampa Bay Times) that Cubs are in pursuit of a Rays starter.

Not against it, but why should we give up assets to acquire someone who might be our 4 or 5 starter and won't pitch in the postseason?

Our no. 4 probably makes postseason starts. Pretty rare to go 3-man these days.

The only thing that could make it worse is if one of them blew out their elbow. Oh, wait.

If they actually considered Luis Castillo(traded in Cashner deal) for Shelby Miller.....Offer them Candelario or Zagunis and see if it works.....

DBacks have a completely traditional (or, as they call it, 'real') approach to baseball. They liked Castillo so much cause his fastballs are fast. Makes me kinda wish we had a Junior Lake in the org, a raw but athletic AAA guy is exactly what they'd want for Miller at this point.

As it is I see them asking for one of Eloy, Cease, EJM, or De La Cruz (in suspected order of preference). One might be able to sell them on Underwood and a rookie-league type tho, since Underwood's pitches are generally well-respected.

I may be ignoring a Theo tax - was it Towers or Stewart who was afraid to deal with Theo?

Candelerio, one of Tseng/Underwood/Johnson, one of Sands/Steele/Paulino/Clifton/Twomey/Hudson/Kellogg.. basically, any non Cease/De La Cruz/Moreno A/A+ pitcher.

More than he's worth, but I'd be ok with letting them save face in hopes that Bosio can fix him.

davis walks a lot of dudes...just saying

Not only is he walking more hitters (you were def right there), but he's now likely hurt. Good call!

Indians got Andrew Miller

Yankees got Clint Frazier to pair with Rutherford

Really interested to see the entire package for obvious reasons. Lucroy under contract next year and Miller for the next 2 years so they may have gutted their farm but at least they gutted it for a multiple year window of competing

At least he's going to an AL club and we won't have to face him until the World Series. =D>

Looks like entire return to NYY is Clint Frazier (BA midseason #21) and Justus Sheffield (BA midseason #69). Kinda surprised it's not more, honestly.

I thought there were 4 total players? Would be disappointed if it was just those 2. That would be comparable to Torres and something between Eloy and Almora, certainly not a Kyle Schwarber like haul.

So yeah would be disappointed if Theo ended up with a rental with a DV background over a slightly bigger haul for 2.5 years of Miller

It's 4 players and the other 2 are pitchers, that's the word anyway
