seems like the Cubs are gonna be asked for more than other teams.

That's what I'm afraid of. I'm glad Theo & Jed are in charge but part of me worries that we won;t be able to make some very necessary deals because other teams think we will be desperate due to the history of the club and also because we have a ton of talent in the minors.

The problem is that it seems teams are requesting players that are helping our MLB team rather than our guys in the minors, which isn't usually what a contending team is interested in doing.

I want to read about a rumor that involves Happ, Torres or even Eloy.

True. I think that's one big reason why Cashman is so hot for Schwarbs. He's a major league player but due to his injury he's not a factor this season.

To us,(Thank God) Javy has more value than an A Ball Pitcher. My guess is Gausman on the other end of the deal, but this speculation is kind of dumb, especially since THAT team wasn't going to do the deal either.

With Maddon's relationship and Bosio I just have a weird feeing the Cubs are going to pry Archer from the Rays. What does it take?

Jimenez, Happ, Torres, Hudson?

It all depends on the other teams' plans going forward. The Yankees aren't doing a fire sale for the purpose of a full blown rebuild. They're loaded with free agents to be, and unfortunately, most of them don't have a lot of value at this time, so they're dangling Miller as well. But they have the foundation and enough payroll coming off the books to be right back in the thick of contention next year, so they're going to seek someone like Schwarber, who can be a part of it.

Sellers are asking for big league talent from us because they know we have a glut of young PP talent, but the cupboards bare in terms of pitching prospects.

As for the Padres asking for Baez, the Padres are weird.

They wouldn't trade all 3. I would do Jimenez or both Happ and Torres. Hudson isn't worth much at this point so I don't see the point of giving him away.

Edit: I didn't realize Archer's contract was that good. Screw it, give them all three if they'll actually trade him.

Have you SEEN the FA class this upcoming off season? The Yankees are fucked for 2017. Much longer if they spend big this off season.

I mean, I get the desire for another left handed bat. But unless Contreras will be catching nearly full time, I will not be happy about the move.

Deadline megathread is lame. We can devote a thread in the Transactions sub-forum to any individual rumor on a noteworthy guy.

Reddick would be cool. I like that dude.

How about 3/5

Montero most of Arrieta's and Ross for Lester obv.

Reddick has been a very good hitter the last two seasons.

Could he be flipped to the Yankees for Miller and or Chapman?

Reddick is a free agent after this season. Don't see how that'd be a fit at all.

It’s still not enough to overcome the long-term value that Schwarber provides, but it’s at least an argument that it’s not insane for the Cubs to consider a deal involving those two, especially if the Yankees sweetened the pot.

Like, say, adding Aroldis Chapman to the deal. Putting Chapman and Miller in the Cubs bullpen, along with Hector Rondon and Pedro Strop, would give the Cubs the best bullpen in baseball, to go along with all the other things they’re the best at. And at that point, the short-term upgrade would be large enough that I think the Cubs would have to at least consider moving Schwarber.

I know the Cubs love his personality and his work ethic, and perhaps he will turn into the kind of franchise cornerstone that justifies keeping him for the future, even if he could bring back a serious upgrade to the team in the short-term. But given the questions I have about his offensive upside, in addition to the real questions about his defensive value, I think I’d at least be engaging the Yankees on a Schwarber-for-Miller-and-Chapman deal. Schwarber looks like a very nice young hitter, but the Cubs have other guys who also look like nice young hitters.

What they don’t have is a World Championship in the last century. Kyle Schwarber can’t help them with that this year. Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman could, and from my perspective, the short-term upgrade might be worth the long-term cost.

I don't understand how "smart" baseball guys can know the playoffs are a crapshoot and still think any move that requires a long term sacrifice of wins makes sense. The improvement in the odds in the playoffs for what even Miller and Chapman would bring is so damn marginal.

It's like, most of the informed baseball public knows the playoffs are basically a roll of the dice...making moves that sacrifice the long term to secure a playoff berth makes a lot of sense. Making moves that do so in an effort to improve the chances of a team already virtually assured of a playoff berth will never make any sense to me and people talk about it all the time. People who understand the playoffs are a crapshoot.

Thank god Theo and Jed obviously know this (as they've publicly said it many times).

I'd rather just give Reddick's potential ABs to Baez the rest of the way. Even if he doesn't keep hitting the way that he is, the defense will make him valuable.

Skimmed that Cameron article during lunch...It's hilarious to me how people just refuse to accept that the Cubs want to keep Schwarber.
