Corey Patterson tore his ACL in July 2003 and was ready for Spring Training in 2004. Bold prediction: Kyle heals faster than expected, makes the league his bitch for the last two weeks of September and carries us to a WS win. Four WS wins. 4 of them.

Not sure if you are kidding but there is 0% chance he's back this year. I don't care if he's running marathons in September they won't bring him back.

Oh, im definitely kidding. He wont be back. But I miss him already and i want him back for October :(

I decided to take a siesta to cut time off the wait and woke up to this. Unfortunate to say the very least, but after I saw some of the stills of the collision, I was preparing for this outcome.

Coming into the season people were asking where Soler and Baez would be getting their ABs. Now the answer to that question has been clarified. Certainly, Schwarber's approach is more advanced and this is probable a net loss in production, but if there was a position on the field where this loss could be absorbed, it was in LF. I didn't mean to imply in my earlier post that this loss wouldn't (won't, ugh) impact the bottom line at all, just that the team's depth will mitigate it to a fair degree.

It sucks, but the offense will still be an engine of doom, and the Cubs will still win the division.

Yeah, I thought about it, and short of our 3-5 SP and bullpen, taking everything into account, there's not a single player of significance I'd rather it have been if it had to be one (well, aside from Soler, I suppose).

Patterson injured his running forward, coming down to hard on his foot with his own body weight, and suffered a small tear on his acl (front/center ligament)

Schwarber had his lower leg half ripped off from the side, snapping his lateral (outside) ligament and Demolishing his knee all the way to the center where the acl is.

I didn't even know an LCL was a thing. I thought there was the ACL and MCL.

There's a PCL too and two menisci

I could see Javy becoming a range monster in LF.

It would be nice if he could hit Major League pitching though.

ACL and PCL kind of wrap around each other in the center, ACL in front-ish, PCL in back-ish. MCL stabilizes the inside of each knee and LCL stabilizes the outside of each.

You must be a football guy, as being tackled from the side would tear the MCL. Somehow fowler got between schwarber a legs. This team is very close.

Well la-di-da, look who knows all about knees.

The most annoying thing about this is the people who think that this news means the end of the Cubs chances for the year.

If by annoying you mean hilarious, then yes.

If such people existed,' they'd be a little of both.

Well, I didn't need or want to read this.

For those who understand roster juggling better than me (ie everyone), what's the benefit of putting Schwarber on the 15 day DL instead of the 60 day DL when he's guaranteed out for the season?

Putting him on the 60 day removes him from counting towards the 40-man so they can add a guy who currently isn't on the 40-man without having to make a corresponding move other than 60 day DL'ing Schwarber. With the 15 day he still counts on the 40-man.

He gets that part...he's asking why they didn't move him to the 60 day yet.

Right, so why not take advantage of that? Is it because the person who would fill his 40 man spot would have to be removed when he's added back next season? No one worth adding? Saving the spot for potential trades?

I don't know, but I do know this happens a lot. I think it is a matter of not making gm the move until you have to. As long as they don't have a need for that roster spot today, there is no need to put schwarber on 60 day. I've seen it with pitchers who have had obvious season ending situations. They go on 60 day eventually, but not immediately, unless they need the spot ASAP.
