For a split-second, seeing this thread title active again almost gave me a heart attack. I thought he had some kind of terrible setback.

You and I are different people. I instantly thought of a miracle comeback.

Same

The same. I had a moment of terror there.

I desperately want him on the playoff roster for some pinch hit/DH at bats but I also know there is 0% chance that happens

Honestly, I'm not sure I do. I love the guy and can't wait for him to be back next year, but I just don't know where he fits on this team this year, and who you remove off the roster for a guy that can't play a defensive position.

I'm not arguing in favor of it but you could probably remove one of the old catchers and not miss too much.

Work his way up to like 90 seconds and thats a hobbling walk off trot around the bases.

More importantly, has he been using this time off to practice bat flip techniques?

Why? He already has perfected the technique.

What is your personal feeling on the odds Schwarber plays this year?

I'm putting it at a solid 20% right now. The fact that Theo and Co haven't trained him to say with absolutely certainty that he won't be back until next year makes me believe that there is a realistic non-zero chance.

I think it's non-zero, but not nearly as high as 20%.

I say 5% because every once in a while this FO does some crazy aggressive horsefeathers when you think they might err on the side of caution. Plus he seems pretty far along in his recovery already. But the reality is it'd be really hard for him to get up to game speed (even though we do have a massive lead and a bunch of basically meaningless games coming up).

I dunno guys, I was very very certain that there was no way the Cubs would even begin to entertain him playing next year. It was an absolute certainty to me.

But man Schwarber's response seemed to me like even the FO hasn't told him absolutely not. OK maybe 20% is too high, maybe 10% but I don't think its lower than that. I think Theo dreams at night of Joe being able to PH Schwarber in the 8th inning of a tied playoff game, and him launching one onto Sheffield. I believe the FO is going to give Schwarber every chance to prove he's healthy enough to go.

Or maybe I'm just being delusional on a Friday afternoon.

I certainly want Schwarber back and destroying baseballs again, but unfortunately even if he is healing and regaining strength and all that -- there just isn't enough time left to send him to the minors or AZ to get game ready. Another problem is that we play in the wrong league -- no DH. Schwarber for this yr at least, is most likely only a DH right now. Getting full mobility, agility and the reps needed to play C and LF adequately would take a while.

I'm not saying there is no chance, but its low. Very low chances unfortunately...maybe >1% (especially if they go far in the playoffs), but not by that much. No way is there a 10% of coming back this yr sadly.

don't think anyone even speculating on a return this year would go as far as to think they'd put him in LF or C...more like pinch hit weapon off the bench, maybe world series DH

oh man how awesome would that be. Schwarbs spends 4 weeks in Arizona hitting and getting his timing and then becomes the DH for game 1 of the World Series. The only shitty thing about that scenario is him not being in the dugout for the playoff run.
