If it is an ACL, does that kill him catching?

I would think if there's meniscus damage or an MCL tear yes. But from what I understand repaired ACLs are often stronger than before after recovery.

Also from experience as a sports fan, it might be 3-4 years until he can dunk again.

Or at least until he hears from God.

I'm still holding out hope that it's not a season ender.

I'm usually optimistic, but I'd be shocked if there's not a ligament or meniscus tear. X-ray revealed the sprain and we used that to be momentarily happy, but it's about time to face the sadness.

At that point the catcher stuff will be over and most of us we'll wish we just had a DH which will never come.

I would think given the length of the baseball season, anything but an ACL/MCL tear would get him back on the field this year, but I could definitely be wrong.

I've got a bad feeling he probably already failed the ACL test.

And the late in the day thing doesn't sound great either. Possibly getting a second opinion on injuries/surgery options?

can you have a career as a major league outfielder who occasionally catches without a meniscus?

that's a really fast recovery if you remove it. and, as we saw with rose, it can present a lot more complications if you repair it.

it's not like he needs to be jumping 40" soooo...

OK, time to hope for the best:

He's out 3-4 months -- no ACL or MCL or anything else really nasty. Baez and Soler both thrive with their expanded playing time. Soler turns into a dong-mashing beast of the likes of Schwarber. Baez displays himself as an elite super utility guy with major donging tendencies. We cruise to a ten-game lead in the division. And Schwarber comes back after the All-Star break, no worse for the wear, and makes it torturous on Joe to fill out a line-up card every morning.

i think people are underrating how bad this is for the cubs if he really is out for the season. i do not have any faith in baez or soler as an everyday player. soler is additionally a black hole defensively, probably even worse than schwarber. if schwarber is gone, i'm probably taking three or four wins off my mental projection for the cubs. that could easily be the difference between the division and a wild card. it also significantly weakens our lineup should we make the playoffs.

thank god fowler came back.

If they lost Schwarber for the whole year, it'd drop their projection by roughly the same amount that the 3-0 start raised it. It would be a much bigger style points and fun void than production void.

Luckily for us, Schwarber doesnt need his knees quite as much as someone like Derrick Rose. The catching would be in jeaporady, but overall his career wouldn't be threatened. With Rose, we all knew he was in big trouble after the first knee injury in 2012, just because he is a player that relies so much on his ability to explode and change directions.

Good God.

Just because he's a big dude doesn't mean he's Babe Ruth.

yeah i'm just hoping that either baez or soler can figure it out to fill the style and fun void.

but even they won't walk up to thuggish ruggish bone.

having some combination of Soler/Baez/Szczur/La Stella/Victorino favorably platoon to be league average isn't exactly long odds

hurts us the most at C with the extra Grandpa PT, i think

If any team can handle something like this, it is Joe Maddon's team. I think he will mix and match Sczur, Baez, and Soler to mitigate a fair percentage of the offense lost.

I'm also holding out hope that it isn't as bad as some here are predicting. I really wish Dex would have begged off on that fly ball.

i always thought tree was doing a bit when he'd make those panicky alarmist threads over the last few years when we sucked or weren't yet established to be ridiculously awesome

All this means to me is that IF he's lost for the year and IF some combination of Soler/LaStella/Szczur/Baez/McKinney/Almora/etc. can't do a satisfactory job replacing him then we just have to have Josh Reddick thrown in the Sonny Gray trade and maybe have to expedite it's execution to late June/early July instead of at the deadline.

also, we're currently projected 12 games ahead of the Pirates and Cardinals (this assumed 2.2 WAR for Schwarbs), so...

Guys, good news. I've given it a lot of thought, and I've decided he's going to be fine. Positivity! He'll miss 6-8 weeks max. Feel free to come back and heart this post when this post is confirmed.

My next door neighbor played with Schwarbs at IU and is waiting on a text back right now.

X-ray doesn't reveal sprain. All xray reveals is that there's no break. Mri will tell if there's a ligament tear.
