Why are we interested in Lucroy? That's a weird thing to me, unless they really don't think Caratini is a suitable backup. But why upgrade a position for maybe half a win? And that half a win only exists if you believe the projection and knock down the playing time.

He's probably going to cost next to nothing in terms of prospect cost. So if that's the case then it makes more sense to go after him then Avila since either way they will both just end up being a backup catcher.

Contreras is probably the one player on the roster where there'd be the biggest drop off if he were to be hurt, so Lucroy/Avila would be less about upgrades and more about risk aversion.

That makes complete sense. I think I'd rather have Avila if it were a choice between the two

Rogers chimes in

This part made me laugh but also pissed me off a bit

"He is always upbeat and in a good mood," one veteran umpire said of Contreras. "He does have some youthful exuberance, and I do have to remind him sometimes that he doesn't want to piss us [umpires] off. Overall, I think he is a good kid and a hell of a ballplayer."

And this has been my biggest gripe with him this season. It will get better but right now it is not where we need it to be and has affected the pitching quite a bit.

"His biggest thing would be continually understanding calling the game, and receiving, and it's getting better right now," Maddon said. "You see him block the ball, you see him throw the ball; it's hard to imagine him getting better at either one of those two things."

His blocking and throwing might be good, but Maddon isn't wrong about "catching the edges," as Contreras is 60th among 66 qualified catchers with a minus-59.9 Catcher Strikes Looking Above Average. In other words, he could have up to 60 more strikes called for his pitchers this season.

He has to get a better read of the location of the pitch out of the pitchers hand. Too often he catches low pitches that catch the bottom of the zone as if they are headed for the dirt, and he tends to catch the high strike with too much movement. Those borderline calls that we have not been seeing this year have been a bit due to his inexperience but that's ok. That stuff will get better over time. What he's done in the last couple seasons to get this far is nothing short of spectacular.

Also, with Miggy, Jake's era was mid-6 and with Willy it's under 3.

Somehow in just 102 PA Jorge Soler has accumulated neg-1.1 fWAR, the second-worst total in the league behind Cargo who has neg-1.6 in 3x as many PA.

The pissed off comment was at the ump admitting he might develop a bias if Willson pisses him off

Do you really want our catcher pissing off umpires?

No

I don't want professional umpires to be horsefeathering petty

It appears Theo may have committed trade rape against the Royals.

Gross. Don't do that.

Relax, it's a reference to The League.

So Willson hasn't really made any serious money yet, right?

Might he be a candidate for an early extension?

Didn't they try in the offseason? And he preferred playing it out?

don't recall hearing that, but i might've missed it i guess

edit - this snippet from heyman is all i could find

The Cubs tried to lock up a few others among their supreme young talents, including catcher Willson Contreras. As Contreras has limited experience (but extraordinary talent), they wanted to include multiple options, which was a sticking point.
