So one month in, how is everyone feeling about the Cubs?

Arrieta's velocity and Hendricks' results ticking up takes a big chunk of any worry I had away. I'm mildly worried that Lackey might be toast and that Anderson isn't quite good, but those are much more tolerable problems. The bullpen has exceeded expectations.

On the offensive side, Almora and Jay have been much better than expected, Almora's peripherals in particular are really encouraging. Montero with a hot start is nice too. Baez has been disappointing, but he's had crummy months before(in 2016 alone he had a .243 wOBA in May and .252 in August), so that's part of the price you pay for the hot streaks. It'll be tricky to decide how much rope to give him with Almora/Jay hitting so well though.

yeah, i'm trying hard not to get too excited about almora's walk rate and power bc it is difficult to process how valuable he could be with those two things (and adding that player to this roster is also hard to comprehend)

Almora is going to be a stud. I'm not sure when I passed from willing it to be true to actually believing it. But I firmly believe it now.

I wish we had better plate discipline metrics for MiLB, I feel like he and Javy are perfect illustrations of the the pro and con arguments for 'can plate discipline/pitch recognition be taught/developed?'

Almora has always been significantly better against LHP than he has against RHP and that is certainly holding true this year.

Vs RHP his wOBA is 224 right now

i wanted to hold that against him but in the minors last year he had a reverse split

this is amusing to see (last cal. year)

Yeah I'd expect his LHP line to regress and his RHP to progress given more time. It's also noteworthy that he's probably seeing a disproportionate number of ABs against RHP that are against RP v. SP which makes things a little tougher on him. His 6% walk rate and 20% K rate against same sided pitching is on point, so with some better matchups, BABIP progression, and just luck I'd expect him to look more normal.

Still, for the vast majority of his milb career he was much better against LHP

Miggy is proof that Ben Zobrist's Game 7, 10th inning hit opened up a portal into some Bizarro World alternate timeline.

Trump is president. The Cubs suck. Jason Heyward's slugging% is higher than Schwarber's. Miggy is hitting .382.

Addison Russell - SS - Cubs

Addison Russell (shoulder) could be held out of the Cubs' lineup again Friday.

Russell was scratched from Wednesday's lineup due to right shoulder soreness which he said had gradually gotten worse over the past week. It's an issue that he dealt with at times last season, as well. "With the type of soreness I have in my shoulder, I think throwing is putting gas on the fire," Russell said Wednesday. "But I got work done, I didn't throw (Wednesday), and it feels better right now than it did when I woke up. That's a good thing." Javier Baez will fill in at shortstop if Russell is unable to go for Friday's series opener in St. Louis.

I wonder if that's a chronic thing that's just always gonna be an issue?

Poor Ronnie Woo Woo. Can't mooch off of the team anymore like he could when 5000 people might show up to games in the early 90's
