If Mexico somehow comes back and wins this Mexico City might be burned to the ground by morning.

I was thinking if they don't come back and win this it will burn to the ground.   If England keep sitting back like this there's almost no way mexico don't score.

Opinion from an uneducated soccer observer: Red cards are stupid.  Having to play a man down based on a subjective ruling from a referee puts way too much power in the ref's hands to completely change a game.

Well, it might be due to scheduling for now but the US is officially the last host country alive.

Somehow match of the World Cup, 2 days after the match of the World Cup

I'd like to throw Colombia-Portugal in the mix. These two knockout games were better, but that one is up there.

Morocco-France and Norway-England should both be fun QFs. Please give us Argentina-Colombia too. Spain would be a clear favorite over either Belgium or the US, but if Portugal wins, that's a pretty even matchup also against whoever wins our game.

I certainly don't understand the foul that caused the England team to be a man down the rest of the game. The dude's leg rolled over the ball, which caused the contact between the two players.

The referees look terrible on these harsh penalties that look entirely like incidental contact. It's the World Cup, dude. Let 'em play unless there is true intent to injure.

I'm enjoying the irony of the chuds taking a victory lap on "Trump getting Balogun back" without recognizing that he's only on the team because of birthright citizenship

I mean it does seem like an extraordinary measure that only happened because the president of the United States of America intervened. And the head of FIFA previously gave him a hilarious “peace prize” recently.

It was the right call for a red.

And I thought the ref acquitted himself well, especially considering the circumstances. You want a bad ref? Look no further than the Uruguay-France match.

I don’t think they should have let him play. At least, not because the president called. That just looks bad. I know the call was terrible. But it should have been reversed earlier, if it was going to be reversed. Not after a politician stepped in and made a phone call. If USA ends up winning the World Cup it will always come with an asterisk IMO. And, of course, Trump will take credit for the win.

If USA *WON* the world cup, no way is it coming with an asterisk because of a Round of 16 win against Belgium.

Their quarters appearance can come with an asterisk.

I think worrying about them winning is unnecessary.  Even if we get there, France will beat us like 5-1.

Soccer idiot, but yea after watching the Quansah replay again it seems like the "he struck the ball first / the ball lifted his leg" argument feels kind of weak. It felt like a pretty desperate attempt and so yea the ball forced his leg up, but only because he had to get so out of position to get contact first.

That said, the whole VAR replay/slow-mo arguement seems valid to bring up and question if that's really the standard.

I think it's stupid to use VAR to give reds.  The only involvement VAR should have with cards is to overturn them, not give them. A red should be clear and obvious in the moment, and if it's not given then, shouldn't be given at all.
