that sucks but literally the only reason I ever tuned in was to watch NHL games.

I watched NHL and premier league games and would accidentally have an auto auction on in the background.

I didn't know USA Network still existed. I assumed they stopped broadcasting around 2014 after running a month-long Burn Notice/Monk marathon.

AFAIK they just loaded that marathon into a playlist and pressed repeat.'

I genuinely hope the sports stuff gets moved to peacock premium, another chink in cable's armor would be a good thing. If it is moved to USA, hopefully that's a temporary measure to satisfy current contracts.

You want to have to pay for another subscription service to watch sports plus have to stream it rather than being able to record it? This is terrible. I hate streaming live sports if I don’t have to, especially when it comes to soccer games that frequently air before I wake up.

Yes, I will gladly take on multiple additional subscription services for live sports that likely add up to far less than the OTT streaming service I subscribe to almost exclusively for sports.

With which you have to deal with internet lags causing choppy picture and occasional interruptions, no DVR availability, an occasional inability to rewind/fast forward (not sure if Peacock has this or not). Sounds wonderful.

Your mileage may vary. I don't have any more problems with something like MLB.tv in terms of lag or picture quality than I do with YTTV(which is to say none at all), and I have no real interest in FF/RW or DVRing a game to watch fresh later. Maybe it's harder compared to cable to re-watch some portion of a game of interest, but I'd much rather just be able to watch what I want to watch in real time for substantially cheaper than having to pay for 70+ channels that maybe lead to a few more bells and whistles on the periphery of my enjoyment of that content.

that sucks but literally the only reason I ever tuned in was to watch NHL games.

According to the ratings folks, NBCSN had recently passed FS1 and ESPN2 to be the 2nd-most watched sports channel. Whatever the reason for this is, I don't think it's lack of audience.

USAs ratings have been in steady decline, propped up by WWE on Monday nights which is in its own decline. A complicating factor is they have WWEs pseudo minor league airing on Wednesday nights which is a hockey night on NBCSN. WWE wants Wednesday nights to stifle the upstart competition on TNT, but USA is also paying ~250M/year for the 2 shows. Guess it depends what later this year means and if they could move their Wednesday hockey night to Thursdays beyond their current commitment.

I wonder whether they were banking on the Olympics. Not sure how they negotiate rights but there’s a world in which they weren’t making a ton on their non Olympics programming and were planning on cashing in last summer (and then this summer after the postponement). The reason the Olympics were canceled is pretty much a black swan, act of God event, so I’d imagine it was especially painful.

Yeah I don’t really remember watching NBCSN on actual TV, only time I use them is to stream golf through their app once in a while when they will throw up rounds early on there before it goes live to Golf Channel or regular NBC on TV.

Looks like yahoo sports is laying a bunch of people off today.

I had forgotten Yahoo sports existed, which could be related.

I'll see links to the stories on the other Gawker pages, and the headlines are so baffling. The vast majority of them, the one linked to here included, seem to be exactly what got the new owners to try and rein in the old good writers and made them quit. So now they have a nigh-worthless website without comments and written by no-names that are a pale version of what made the site popular in the first place. Good job?

i don't understand who is giving them traffic. non-left leaning people hate them, and any liberals that didn't bail on them after the exodus can surely see how performative and dumb the current site is. is there a big group of krassenstein relatives out there keeping the site alive?

I'm sure there was a decent portion of deadspin readers that didn't follow the drama around the breakup

And a lot of websites purposefully use the hate share business model

Add to that how many relavent sites have moved behind paywalls and/or disappeared and there has to be some people just hungry for any free sports content they can find.

Personally it took me months to stop accidentally going on that site. Although to this day I still google the drew magary chili recipe a couple times a year, and the deadspin links remain at the top.
