When did Brett Gardner turn into Matt Holliday?

This bulging melon is practically Jason Voorhees.

Harper has no ligament damage and suffered only a severe bone bruise. Nationals confident he returns this season.

I dunno how that's possible, given the way his leg bent, but good for him if that really is the extent of the injury.

That's funny you posted that Jay Bell story. Believe it or not, I was actually at that game sitting in the LF bleachers about 20 rows back. I've lived in AZ since 91' and going to a D-Backs game was pretty cool early on in their inception. They made kind of a big deal about the contest prior to the game and made several more announcements throughout the first 5 innings, so everyone in the stadium was well aware of what was going on and what needed to happen entering the 6th inning.

Just the fact that Bell even had a chance to come to plate in the 6th with the bases loaded was amazing in itself. The crowd was going nuts when Bell came to the plate and when he actually hit it out, the stadium went absolutely bonkers.

One of my most memorable moments attending sporting events in the Valley of the Sun over the years.

TIL that Richard Hidalgo had seasons of 6 and 7.3 fWAR, as part of a 9 season career in which he amassed 21.2 WAR total.

I haven't heard that name forever, but that sounds about right.

This is a fun read on a High School trick play that I didn't realize was possible: http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/20294816/skunk-outfield-how-most-epic-trick-play-history-broke-baseball

In short, being out of the baseline requires a tag attempt, so you can wander from first base into right field to try to draw a throw, and that led to a 2+ minute (!) standoff.

EAT SHEETS, JEETS:

Previous rumors of new Miami Marlins owner Derek Jeter’s desire to remove the stadium’s dinger sculpture will not be coming to fruition, as Miami-Dade County officials have spoken up to clarify that it is a work of public art that cannot be moved.

The sculpture is the property of the county: public art commissioned and “designed specifically for this project and location,” as head of Miami-Dade County’s cultural affairs arm Michael Spring told the Miami Herald today. (A helpful clarifying comment, as the sculpture is definitely indistinct enough to pass for any project or location.)
