Yep... 😖

"Chicago Cubs top prospect Cade Horton’s season appears to be over.

The 22-year-old right-hander had a setback during his rehab and throwing progression from a moderate subscapularis strain in his right shoulder. President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer anticipates Horton will begin throwing again after the season.

“I don’t think we’ll see him during the season,” Hoyer told the Tribune on Friday before the Cubs-White Sox game at Guaranteed Rate Field."

I don't see it posted yet, but apparently Horton had a setback and is done for the season.  Ugh.  I thought this was a minor injury.

Theo was right... Draft position players.

All the pitching injuries is frustrating to the 10th power.

Should have drafted Brooks Lee. I said the same on draft day as well.

The Org has Hortons arm in bubble wrap and played it as safe as possible, and he still got hurt. Can't say I love the projection of him being a long term starter.

There was at least one team in the top 10 that had Lee off their 2022 draft boards because of his medicals and I wouldn't be shocked if it was the Cubs since they loved him coming out of HS and were trying to get an overslot agreement with him in the 2nd round in 2019 but passed on him in 2022.

I was thinking the same thing. It’s hard not to jump to conclusions, but yea, one Tommy John and now likely shoulder surgery coming after they exhaust all other options. We will see him in 2026 after we’ve all but forgot he existed.

That's a huge leap. I don’t see how the narrative has jumped to “surgery” and not seeing him again until 2026?!?

Horton was the #1 prospect? What idiot put a pitcher on the top of the list? How bad are the bats if a pitcher could top that list?

Well, he was drafted 7th overall, has ace type stuff and dominated AA at 21/22 years old.

That’s what the “idiot” was probably lookin’ at.

He was healthy for a year and half, so I don't see this as anything other than a normal pitching injury. Just look around the league. Pitching injuries are an epidemic.

Yes and no.

Horton has proved his worth. I’m still pleased with the pick. He has special stuff.

With that said, it is a slippery slope using 1st round picks on pitchers. My first comment on the subject was mentioning how Theo had the right idea of picking bats in the first round and preferably college bats.

This situation made me change my position on this year's draft. When the Cubs hit the clock, I wanted Yesavge all the way. I’ve been irked ever since they skipped him for Smith right until the news broke on Horton’s setback. Now, I’m all aboard the Smith pick… And, it is nice having a real 3B in the system again.

Based on this injury (subscapularis) and how it functions in the shoulder, it's not out of the question to think surgery is on the horizon.  Now, if it's truly just the muscle and there's not tendon/ligament damage involved, then yeah, it's probably likely he can avoid going under the knife.  Unfortunately, based on how the rotator cuff works, I'm not real optimistic it's just muscular.

Even if he doesn't require surgery he likely won't be ready for games until next June or July.

The tendon is slow to heal and even normal movement may cause problems—three months to heal and another three months before can throw a baseball at all.

What indication do you have that the tendon is injured to this degree?

I don't know to what extent it's injured, but if he can't throw or has been shut down I would say it's likely significant.

So you just made wild speculation up with zero basis?

This is what MLB.com has FWIW

Quote

Horton (the Cubs’ No. 1 prospect, No. 17 overall, according to MLB Pipeline) suffered a setback in his rehab from a right lat strain, MLB.com confirmed. The expectation is he will get back to throwing, but given where the calendar is, the 22-year-old getting back to competitive action before the end of the Minor League season would be difficult.

He's out for the season because the season only has another ~6 weeks, not because he needs surgery or 11 months of rehab.

He doesn't have a lat strain. He's got a rotator cuff injury.
