Honestly, while I like both guys, I think I would prefer Smyly over Odorizzi, provided everything checked out health wise (I know Smyly missed some time last year, but I can't recall what it was for). Smyly feels like he's got a bit higher ceiling, and I'm not sure Odorizzi is significantly safer than Smyly. Furthermore, it feels like a Smyly/McGee combo might come cheaper than a Odorizzi/McGee combo.

As for whether or not the Cubs can put together enough - if Baez is in there, they can probably get it done with Baez, maybe a major league arm of some sort, and prospects/young players (not sure what on the young players part ... the Rays system is pretty ... well balanced, with positional assets and pitchers, and some intriguing guys in different levels). It's probably going to be costly, but the right combination of pitchers should make it worthwhile to go down that route, particularly if the Cubs get some control at a limited cost. The Rays do seem like one of the better match-ups, club wise, as it relates to arms.

odorizzi and mcgee for a package centered on baez would be sweet, and i'm the anti-trade for pitching guy who loves javy baez

I'd give up a lot of things to get something like an Odorizzi, Moore/Boxberger, Jennings package from the Rays. Baez, Torres, Underwood, Jimenez, Almora, most/all of the above, etc. Individually pretty much every prospect aside from maybe Contreras is in play if I can get away with Baez being the only MLB player. Sign Span after that and call it an offseason.

The thought of Matt Moore for Baez was enough to pop my eyes. Then I saw his 2015 line. What happened there? Injury? Velo drop? Bad luck?

He's been hurt for most of the last two years. Elbow/TJS. His stuff has all been a bit reduced, but time will tell; he'd be a gamble, imo.

I'd rather have Odorizzi at this point, but I'd add a fair bit to have Moore added to a potential deal.

I'd love Matt Moore, but I feel like the Cubs would still need another starter. Between the potential of him being injured/ineffective, Hammel being injured/ineffective, and Arrieta's 250 innings last year...I'd like a more stable arm, but I love Moore's arm talent. I'm probably asking for too much to get a guy like Moore and another SP, but I don't know that I'd feel comfortable otherwise. But yeah, if they could get Odorizzi with him (I'd be fine with Odorizzi along with a RP)....I'd be ecstatic. I'm a huge Underwood fan, but I'd be perfectly fine trading him for a talented arm the Cubs would have 3+ years control of.

No thanks on Jennings. Huge downgrade from Fowler.

If 2015 is the only year that matters

(not that i'm particularly crazy about jennings)

i realize his tweet doesn't imply this, but if javy is traded for relievers only i will be pissed

I like Javy a lot, and I just want to see him get a full season under his belt the way Russell did this year. If it's not with us, then with a team like the Rays that will have little impact on us.

If that means McGee and Boxberger in exchange for Baez, I am intrigued, but unsure. That would give us one heck of a pen with Rondon, McGee, Boxberger, Strop & Grimm at the back end. We'd be getting six years of control back (2-McGee, 4-Boxberger) for the six we give up in Javy.

In the end, it depends on your faith in Baez (and Castro + Soler). I'd probably turn this down, but I'd have to think about it for a while.

i'd take into account this FO's demonstrated ability to find good relievers for cheap in that equation too. plus the whole volatility of reliever performance thing.

What is this infatuation with Boxberger? He's not good. He had one great year in 2014 and has otherwise been poor. His 2015 peripherals are just bad. 4.26FIP 4.00xFIP 4.57BB/9 including a constantly high HR/FB%

I saw some tweets that said something along the lines of Schwarber for relievers is unlikely to happen. That actually made me laugh out loud.

I am assuming that Boxberger is the "top closer" we were mentioned with.

going after a guy with a lot of saves and bad peripherals just doesn't fit this front office's MO at all

Agree -- I am just thinking about how rumors and "sources say" tweets start.
